Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native plants and trees that helps birds and wildlife thrive in your area! Well-known Audubon® Native River Birch (Betula nigra) always carries wonderful visual interest! The peeling exfoliating bark of this native works beautifully with modern, rustic and contemporary styles.

Quickly becoming a multi-stemmed native shade tree, its silky, smooth, light-tan bark that peels and exfoliates, it’s the perfect foil to the airy, breezy foliage that glows fresh, light green. Female catkins stand up on the ends of the branches in spring, and the autumn male catkins dangle delicately downwards, for a truly unique texture.

Birds nibble the buds and catkins, while insectivorous birds feast and feed their hungry chicks on the many larvae that rely on Birch as host plants! River Birch transforms again when the Fall Color of the branches and the leaves turn butter-yellow and lights up the autumn landscape.

Planting and Application:

There is nothing prettier than a meandering stand of River Birch near a water feature. For a natural grouping, plant loose clusters of 3 or 5 to create a stand that wildlife will flock to and will bump curb appeal big time.

Birch are incredible, long-lived, fast-growing windbreaks. Don't forget to include some in your shelterbelts in front of larger evergreen trees. They are a fantastic choice for water's edges and where the gutters drain. Because this tree can tolerate moist soils, it should be considered for Rain Gardens.

  • Deciduous, Fast-Growing Pyramidal Growth
  • Glossy Green Leaves
  • Host Plant - 400-Plus Species of Moth & Butterfly
  • Specimen, Screening, Natural Groups, Shelterbelts, & Rain Gardens
  • Feeds Chickadees, Titmice, Tanagers, Cardinals, Crossbills, Sparrows & Siskins

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant River Birch in either full sun or partial shade Once established they are tough and rugged! Wait to Prune your River Birch tree until after leaves appear in spring because the sap is rising before then.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Rarely Bothered by Deer
  • Can Grow in Moist Soils
  • Most Adaptable & Heat Tolerant
  • Bronze Birch Borer Resistant
