Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

We’re proud to introduce the National Audubon Society line of native trees that have been selected to help birds and wildlife in your area! The Audubon® Native American Hornbeam Tree (Carpinus caroliniana) features unique leaves with a delicate corrugated texture and double-toothed margins!

Bird-Friendly landscapes and small space, the new growth arrives in spring in red-purple then ages to green. Fall touches your tree and makes it explode into incredible fall colors, including reds, yellows and orange. You'll add an excellent butterfly resource tree with this choice, as the leaves are a larval host for many species.

A lovely native understory tree, it plays host to several species of caterpillars and other insects, including the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, the Striped hairstreak, and the Red-spotted Purple. Don’t worry about the bugs, birds love to eat them and feed their chicks! A member of the Birch family, it produces buds, catkins, and nutlets are held in lobed bracts that many birds and wildlife relish!

Planting and Application:

The American Hop Hornbeam is also an ideal Street Tree as it is very tolerant of urban conditions. Also suitable as an understory tree for naturalizing throughout woodland gardens. The strong wood makes these great windbreak trees and shelterbelts, supporting heavy snow loads and tolerating strong wind.

The Audubon website says these Bird-Friendly trees benefit and attract songbirds such as Chickadees, Titmice, Finches, Wrens, and Sparrows, but also Turkeys, Grouse, and Quail. Plus many types of wildlife looking for food, shelter and nesting.

  • Great Shade & Street Tree
  • Caterpillar Host Plant for Several Moth Species & Insect Larvae that Feed Birds
  • Unique Persistent Catkins & Decorative Seed Pods
  • Deep Yellow-Green Foliage
  • Very Strong Trunks & Timber

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This native Hornbeam prefers full sunlight but is also tolerant to partial shade or even full shade in hotter climates. Adaptable to moist or dry conditions, these are great all-around resistant and hardy trees throughout USDA zones 4 - 8.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade & Even Full Shade
  • Tolerate: Deer, Drought, Clay Soil
