We’re proud to introduce the National Audubon Society line of native trees that have been selected to help birds and wildlife in your area! One attractive native is the Audubon® Native American Hop Hornbeam Tree (Ostrya virginiana) featuring persistent hop-like fruits that birds love!
A lovely and underused pest-free, mid-sized native, the Hop Hornbeam fills out with lance-shaped, sharply-serrated leaves all growing season. Spring foliage unfurls purplish-red and matures a deep yellowish-green. Showy male catkins persist throughout the winter. The tiny female flowers produce nutlets, which hang in tiered papery sacks, providing much-needed nourishment for Backyard Birds.
Sometimes called Hophornbeam, it’s also known as the Musclewood because of the blue-grey bark’s texture, and Ironwood because of its extremely hard, dense timber. The Hornbeam is a fantastic Shade Tree but also a vital wildlife tree! A larval host for several butterflies and many insects, these bugs support flocks of birds feeding their hungry chicks! The shaggy bark provides winter seed storage for Nuthatches!
Planting and Application:
The American Hop Hornbeam is also an ideal Street Tree as it is very tolerant of urban conditions. Also suitable as an understory tree for naturalizing throughout woodland gardens. The strong wood makes these great windbreak trees and shelterbelts, supporting heavy snow loads and tolerating strong wind.
The Audubon website says these Bird-Friendly trees benefit and attract songbirds such as Chickadees, Titmice, Finches, Wrens, and Sparrows, but also Turkeys, Grouse, and Quail. Plus many types of wildlife looking for food, shelter and nesting.
- Great Shade & Street Tree
- Caterpillar Host Plant for Several Moth Species & Insect Larvae that Feed Birds
- Unique Persistent Catkins & Decorative Seed Pods
- Deep Yellow-Green Foliage
- Very Strong Trunks & Timber
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This native Hornbeam prefers full sunlight but is also tolerant to partial shade or even full shade in hotter climates. Adaptable to moist or dry conditions, these are great all-around resistant and hardy trees throughout USDA zones 4 - 8.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade & Even Full Shade
- Tolerate: Deer, Drought, Clay Soil
- Prefers Rich, Well-Drained Soil
- Winter Interest & Low Maintenance Rounded Canopy
- Prune While Dormant
