Growing Zones 3-8
Big bold blooms, Professor Kippenburg Aster (Aster novae-belgii 'Professor Kippenburg') covers itself in masses of semi-double, lilac-blue flowers with narrow fringe-like petals resembling daisies! The flowers are 1-2" wide making it a definite showstopper from late summer until frost. The effect is indescribable!
Small-sized mounds of fine textured green leaves, these perennial flowers look great all growing season and are relatively worry-free plants! Then late summer arrives and your entire plant will become smothered in these darling blossoms! Blooming nonstop until frost in many areas, you'll be delighted by swarms of bees and butterflies arriving to sip the ample nectar!
The slender, densely branched stems fill out with fine-textured lance-shaped leaves. A New York Aster, the Professor is cold hardy and adaptable throughout chilly USDA zones 3 through mild zone 8. Widely adaptable and deer resistant, these retain all the hardiness of their native counterparts!
Planting and Application:
Definite butterfly and bird attractor, Professor Kippenburg looks great in borders and mass plantings to draw the eye and draw the maximum amount of colorful 'flying flowers' and bees too! Asters are a host plant for the Pearl Crescent Butterflies larvae, and feed hungry bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects with their generous amounts of late-season nectar! Try planting a completely native flower garden, naturalized prairie or wildflower border garden with a collection of Asters and other pollinator-friendly flowers!
In the garden bed and border, these are light and airy perennials to add late-season color and easy care resilience to cottage borders and cut flower gardens alike! These cheerful little plants fit anywhere in the sun garden, perennial border or container gardens! And adding just one or two turns any garden into a pollinator garden! Pot up onto your porch and patio, around seating areas and anywhere you want a front row seat to the show!
- 1-2" Wide Semi-Double, Purple Flowers
- Months of Late-Season Blooms
- Attracts Butterflies & Bees!
- Easy-Care & Adaptable Perennial Wildflowers
- Airy Texture For Perennial Gardens, Pollinator Beds & Cottage Borders
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Requiring full sun to flower best, these herbaceous perennials prefer planted in a moderate soil with good drainage. Xeric plants, Asters are tolerant of lower moisture environments once established, but should not be allowed to become extremely dry during the summer. Pinching back the stem tips in late spring and early summer will produce denser growth and heavier blooming. This plant may be divided every few years in the spring.
