Quaking Aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) are gorgeous, fast-growing native trees distributed over most of North America, including the United States and Canada. You may have seen and loved them in National Forests throughout the Rocky Mountains. They are a pioneering species of trees that are one of the first trees to invade open areas and prairies.

There is nothing like hearing the wind rustling through a group of Aspen trees on a summer day.

One of the most endearing features of Quaking Aspen is that their heart-shaped leaves quake and flutter back and forth with the slightest breeze, making a soft sound like rain. The sounds of the leaves blowing through a native stand of Aspen has been admired and memorialized by poets and writers alike.

Distinctive Leaves and Lovely Fall Color

Quaking Aspen grow tall and somewhat pyramidal in their outline when young and may be mistaken for Birch. As these trees age, they can develop a more rounded form.

Aspen have heart-shaped leaves that are dark green on top and a lighter color on the underside. The long petioles cause the shiny leaves to easily wave in the breeze, setting the entire tree alight and rustle, giving your landscape a soothing sound, giving them the common name Trembling Aspens. The Quaking Aspen is a deciduous tree and will lose its beautiful leaves in fall.

In the fall, the Aspen leaves color turns an incredibly clear yellow color. While yellow is the most typical fall color you'll see, native stands can exhibit some orange and even pockets of red. It's vibrant in the landscape and makes a big statement.

The bark on young Aspen trees may not show the classic light color, but once they hit a couple of inches in width (or caliper), they turn a lovely chalky greenish-white color. The beautiful smooth, white bark from Quaking Aspen trees was used by pioneers and American Indians for medicinal purposes.

How To Use Quaking Aspen Trees in Your Landscape

Quaking Aspen can be used as a specimen tree in a lawn area where it can easily be maintained. Or you can plant Aspen trees mixed in clumps and single stem plants in natural groups. Thriving in USDA hardiness zones 2 through 6, these lovely shade trees do great in a wide range of soil types and are very cold hardy and don’t mind higher elevations of Colorado and harsh winters of the midwest!

Use Quaking Aspens to create a sense of enclosure without feeling like you live in a fortress. Create a respite from the modern world with a loose, zig-zagging row of several of these trees. Pro tip? Leave enough space when planting to wind a mulched nature trail between them.

Plant them in a gentle curve around an out-of-the-way spot in your backyard. What a magical, private place to put a hammock. Aspens also make incredible vistas or views from your deck or patio. Nature can be brought home and enjoyed to the fullest with wonderful native trees like this one. Try your hand at landscaping to gift yourself a real sense of peace on your property.

Long-Lived Wildlife Tree

Aspen trees are also an excellent tree species for wildlife habitats in full sun. Like Northern Red Oaks, these keystone species attract ruffled grouse feed on the catkins and buds, and elk and deer feed on the leaves in fall and winter. Butterflies, moths and caterpillars also feed on the leaves.

These adaptable trees love a rich, humusy soil that is consistently moist, but they grow naturally in dry and rocky soils in the Rocky Mountains where usually only Deodar Cedar trees and conifers. Their tolerance of soil types is one of the reasons this tree is so widely distributed.

Sometimes forming root suckers and root sprouts that create their own groves and colonies. You can easily prune these off or just mow around them a couple of times a year to remove these should they form. Aspen can be very successfully incorporated into today's more natural landscapes where they can support plenty of wildlife.

We sell out of this beautiful native tree. If it's in stock, please place your order today!

Quaking Aspen Tree

I ordered a quaking Aspen and received it in excellent condition due to Nature Hill securing it well in the cardboard shipping box! I planted the tree on the same day that I received it but opted to wait until the evening when the temperature was cooler. Then, I gave the tree a little water and mulch. I am so happy because the tree has some new growth and is thriving well! Thank You , Nature Hill, for your excellent Planting Guide so my tree got a good start!

Hi Mary! We're thrilled to hear that your quaking Aspen tree arrived in excellent condition and that our planting guide was helpful in giving it a good start. We hope it continues to thrive in its new home. Thank you for choosing Nature Hill!

Growing in N Georgia Mountians!

I bought this tree in 2020, after talking with customer service. We discussed that my area is out of the Aspens comfort zones 2-6 (I am zone 7 ). However, I am also at elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level, so the Aspen MAY survive ok. Well, here are photos of her 2 years old. Seems to be doing well! I did keep fencing around the tree for those years as we have many deer, rabbits. I do question if I should prune off smaller branches that grow about 1-2 ft from ground- should this be done this winter?

Dear Michelle,

Thank you so much for sharing your Aspen tree journey with us! It’s wonderful to hear that despite the zone challenge, your tree is thriving beautifully two years in the elevated North Georgia mountains—that’s a real testament to your care and the protection you’ve provided against deer and rabbits.

Regarding your question about pruning those lower branches: yes, it is generally a good idea to prune toward late winter before the new growth cycle begins. Removing the smaller branches 1-2 feet from the ground can help reduce the risk of disease and encourage a stronger, more upright structure for your Aspen. Just be sure to use clean, sharp tools and avoid cutting too far into the older wood.

If you’d like, we can also send you some detailed guides on Aspen care and winter pruning tips. Feel free to reach back anytime—supporting your growing success is what we love to do!

Wishing you happy planting,
