Lovely sky blue to lavender blue slender petals around sunny yellow centers, the Aromatic Aster (Aster oblongifolius/Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) is native to the eastern and central United States! Mounds of fine-textured green foliage that is aromatic when crushed. Forming in the spring and remaining until frost each year!

These fantastic blooms show up a bit late on the scene, but the autumn color is well-worth the wait! Especially for migrating and remaining pollinators, this is a fantastic late-season source of nectar and pollen. Snip a few stems for airy bouquet filler indoors as well!

Deer-resistant Aromatic Asters can have spreading underground rhizomes, creating mounds and politely spreading groundcover mats throughout the sunny landscape of USDA growing zones 3 to 8. Growing 1 go 3 feet in height and width at maturity, Asters are fantastic late-season herbaceous perennials.

Planting and Application:

A hardy native found grows on slopes, throughout sunny prairies, in ditches along the road and fence lines in open areas, Aromatic Asters are a surprise burst of color in the August to September landscape! Plant in your Cottage Gardens and mixed Perennial borders to enjoy their fine-textured greenery for your other plants all growing season. Pollinator gardens and native plantings benefit from these hardy perennials where conditions can sometimes be tough.

Aromatic Asters are great lower growing, spreading, to mid-sized perennials for use as edging and small backdrops. Create groupings throughout the landscape to increase the impact of the color, and the draw they have on butterflies and bees! En Masse plantings fill difficult areas with color without all the work, like hard to mow hillsides, eroding slopes, and hot parched ground in commercial sites.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant your perennial Aster in well-drained soil in full sun for best results. Water new plants regularly but once established, Asters are rather drought resistant! Mulch with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips to hold in moisture and keeps the roots cool. Prune back your mounds near the ground each fall once the foliage dies back after the first hard frost. Top-dress the crowns with mulch for a winter layer of insulation. Divide clumps every 3-5 years to maintain vigor and keep them in bounds if needed.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Soil & Appreciates Mulch
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Deer Resistant
  • Prune Back After Frost in Fall & Divide Every 3-5 Years

Aromatic Asters are just the native boost of late-season color and fragrance your landscape needs! Order your quality perennials today at Nature Hills, and we will ship your order at the right time to plant for your growing zone!
