Growing Zones 4-8
The Catlin's Giant Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant') is a useful ground cover with short spikes of pretty blue flowers. Catlin's Giant Ajuga, is one of the largest-growing Ajuga varieties, forming bronzy-red, spinach-like aromatic leaves. This Ajuga is an excellent flowering groundcover for shady to sunny areas where perennials and grass will not grow.
Combine Catlin's Giant Ajuga with yellow and purple spring-blooming perennials to make an attractive garden. The flowers appear in spring on 10-inch tall flowering spikes and are a boon to Pollinators! You may even see a few hummingbirds dropping by!
Growing 6-8 inches tall and spreading a tidy 18-24 inches wide, Bugleweed thrives throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8! Highly adaptable to a wide range of sun and soil types, you’ll love how adaptable these perennials are! In warm climates, you'll also enjoy the semi-evergreen leaves and color all winter!
Landscape Application:
This Ajuga looks especially good in containers and mixed planters as spillers and fillers! Window boxes, patio pots, and as an accent around a larger specimen plant in front porch urns are ideal locations for these showy space-saving plants!
Anyone who has planted Mint in their garden can attest to how well it can spread when allowed! Since Ajuga is in the Mint family, it can also spread very well. You can plant these creeping perennials on banks or slopes to make hard-to-mow hillsides safer, and slow erosion, and they are ideal for fast mass planting. Plant under trees or around shrubs to create a lacy skirt or hide bare leggy stems as a facer plant. Looking great in front of your foundation plantings and hedges.
Plant along pathways or between pavers for a pretty journey around your landscape, not worrying about damaging it, as Bugleweed is tolerant to foot traffic Hardy enough for Rock Gardens, and pretty as front of the Cottage border accents, Ajuga are pretty low-growing accents.
- Purple Spike Blooms

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Catlin's Giant Ajuga will do best in a shaded area but will adapt to the morning sun and the colors will be more vivid, the foliage also does well in afternoon shade in hot climates. Ajuga prefers moist soil with good drainage but will tolerate moderately dry areas once established. Try to avoid soggy conditions and clay soil that can cause rot.
Pruning is recommended in the early spring. Some choose to mow this ground covering perennial after flowering to remove spent flower spikes and clean up the area. Be mindful of its spreading abilities! Plant and maintain it so you keep your area looking neat and lovely! Divide as needed and transplant to expand your enjoyment of this pretty plant!
- Thrives in Both Sunny & Shaded Locations
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture to Low Once Established
- Clean Mounds In Late Autumn or Early Spring
- Low Maintenance Deer-Resistant Plant
