African Iris, Dietes iridioides, is an evergreen perennial with fantastic flowers. Plant a few in your rock garden or perhaps in a wooded area where African Iris plants will lend color and definition. These would also do terrific in some poolside containers, or mixed sporadically into a border.
Iris always has the look of the exotic about them, but unlike many fancy perennials that require pampering, Iris tends to be hardy, easy-to-care-for plants...and African Iris is no exception. Your African iris is a magnificent Iris variety, with 3-inch blooms shooting up amid the lance leaf-like foliage from spring through fall.
The gorgeous blossoms are pristine white, accented with shades of yellow and lavender. Each spectacular bloom lasts one day, but with the repeating nature of this Iris variety, you won't miss out on enjoying its marvelous display. The dark green leaves of your African Iris are evergreen, so will provide some vertical definition to your landscape even when it's not in bloom.
Africa Iris plants will grow 2 to 3 feet tall with a 3 to 4-foot spread. It has a clumping habit and vigorous nature. African Iris is a very hardy perennial that requires no special care and adapts easily to a variety of conditions.
Iris tend to be hardy, fast-growing perennials that not only produce fantastic, exotic-looking blooms, but maintain an evergreen nature. They're perfect for almost any location. It's the type of perennial you can plant and forget...but you're sure to not forget this impressive Iris when it's in your yard this year!
Water-wise and Fire-wise
Dietes iridioides is a variety native throughout Africa. Also known as Dietes vegeta, or African Iris, it is most often found in clearings around lowland brush or on the outside of the forest.
As with the Dieties bicolor, the Dietes iridioides was also involved with a botanical debate over the name Dietes or Moraea. Then, in 1866, Friedrich Wilhelm Klatt finally classified the Moraea as Dieties. The difference in the two species was the plants of the Moraea genre grew from a corm, where the Dieties all grow from rhizomes. The name change occurred, but still today the Dietes Iridioides can be found as Moraea iridioides. Either way, it's a beautiful plant.
Though a native to Africa, the Dietes iridioides is also common in Australia, where it has naturalized in many areas. A member of the Iris family, it requires little water once established. It is recommended for all drought tolerant or xeriscape plantings and does well as a container plant.
It is considered a LOW water user by the California Department of Water Resources, Water Use Classification of Landscape Species (WUCOLS) list, requiring little water after being established.
Dieties iridioides is on all lists as a fire-resistant plant and should be considered for your defensible space planting in all firesafe landscapes.
