Imagine going into your garden when the fall air is starting to crisp and the leaves are starting to turn and picking luscious Red Raspberries from your own bushes. It's not a dream, but an easy reality with Joan J Raspberry!
Spring brings cheerful white blossoms that feed a host of pollinators and beneficial insects. The Joan J is a thornless Raspberry (Rubus x 'Joan J') that consistently produces bunches and bunches of delectable, juicy, firm, sweet berries on stout canes. These great Primocane berries ripen in mid-September and continue bearing until the first frost.
Here's a sweet surprise! Not only will Joan J give you a huge crop of fall berries, but these little bushes will give you a crop in July as well! Two harvests of delicious berries from one bush. You can't beat that! That makes this Primocane more of an Everbearing variety! Joan J is very cold-hardy which makes it a terrific choice for you Northern gardeners. It is good from zone 8 all the way to zone 4!
Planting and Application:
These are easy edible landscaping specimens, since the canes are thornless, there are no "Ouch!" moments and you can pick to your heart's content! Perfect for kids, for planting along walkways and patios without worrying you or your guests will snag clothing or get scratched when plucking fat juicy berries!
These are self-pollinating bushes, so you don't need to order other plants, but you always get more and bigger berries when you plant a friend nearby. Try Polka Raspberry as a companion plant that extends your harvest and boosts pollination! Mixing and matching with other berry bushes brings in the birds and more beneficial insects.
You'll also enjoy a property-defining fruiting hedge, screening around seating and entertaining areas, providing structure and tasty treats! Plant in containers and sunny planters around your deck, patio, or back porch, allowing you to save space, even if you don't have a yard!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Give Joan J good drainage and plenty of sun and you'll be picking berries before you know it! Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun and you'll be picking berries sooner than you can imagine! Raspberry plants need good air circulation, and you'll want to access the entire plant to harvest your crop. Add a slow-release fertilizer in early spring, following directions for proper application rates.
Well-drained soils are important, so plant in raised beds to improve drainage. Berry bushes also need regular water. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are a great time-saver, and a three-inch layer of mulch to cut down on surface evaporation.
These Primocane Raspberries grow from the roots in the spring and are considered first-year canes. Primocanes are also called fall-bearing, these canes also produce fruit in the fall, on the branch tips. Prune the tips of the Primocanes once they have grown a few feet tall. During the spring, before they start growing.
