Huge corrugated leaves, the Celestial Hosta (Hosta 'Celestial') is a large plant that has deeply corrugated, rounded leaves that measure 12-15 inches long! This new variety is considered by some Hosta experts to be an improvement over Northern Halo Hosta and other Sieboldiana types!

This Hosta offers attractive, corrugated, green leaves with a wide cream border! Celestial starts out with dark-green leaves with a greenish-yellow color swept across the margins, and then brightens to a creamy white in the summer. In midsummer, pale-lavender flowers are produced on very tall scapes. They're perfectly poised to attract pollinators and hummingbirds galore, and even look great in cut flower bouquets!

Experienced gardeners delight in the subtle interplay of tones and new gardeners appreciate the easy-care nature of these perennials! You'll have plenty to study, however, as the bright two-tone foliage of Celestial is hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9 and grows into a wonderfully neat and tidy mound about two feet in height and up to four feet wide for an impressive display!

Planting and Application:

Use Hosta, also known as Plantain Lily, to enliven all the dimly lit corners of your yard. This cream-edged, low-care perennial loves a dappled shade and understory setting and often works well as a specimen in the ground or in large planters and oversized tubs in the shaded understory or covered porch or patio! Create a lush paradise for you and your family by integrating these showy perennials at the foot of a long hedge.

Celestial Hosta creates a bright green radiant glen under trees, in shady areas, or at the edge of woodland plantings. They'll also help control erosion on slopes and gullies, and is a fine size for groundcover, edging, or specimen use! Create your own shade-loving perennial display with Ferns, Bleeding Hearts, Coral Bells, and of course other Hosta!

This easy-care perennial is ideal for tubs and patio planters and is one of the most popular landscape plants. Celestial Hosta works equally as well as a specimen or edging plant. No wonder we have professional garden designer customers calling to buy out our entire inventory. You'll be pleased to learn that hard-working Hosta is listed on firewise lists for defensible spaces near your home.

  • Large Corrugated Rounded Leaves
  • Green With Cream Margins
  • Pale Lavender Flowers
  • Attracts Hummingbirds & Pollinators
  • Great Shade Garden Specimens, Edging Plants, Containers & Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Celestial needs high-filtered or dappled sunlight for clean, healthy growth, and prefer the morning sun to intensify the leaf colors, but the hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to Hostas! Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. Be sure to remove dead leaf litter from under your plant for the best results. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Low maintenance, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues! Divide your perennials every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
