The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Need a unique low-growing shrub with bright red berries? The Red Cushion Firethorn Bush (Pyracantha coccinea 'Red Cushion') is a standout shrub that stays low and compact!
Having small, glossy green leaves and a low spreading habit, the thorny branches grow both vertically and horizontally, giving them a natural, uncontrived appearance. Just like their Bramble and Apple family relatives, the cheerful 5-petalled white flowers cover the foliage in spring. Beloved by pollinators, the flowers are quickly followed by the orange-red fruit that persists into the fall, this shrub has something to offer all year round!
Birds arrive in droves to snack on the berries! Cedar Waxwing especially feast on the bright fruit! You can snip a few for bouquets and fall outdoor wreathes and container plantings! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 7 to 10, handling heat and humidity with ease.
As if the red-orange berries aren't enough, fall also brings red-orange fall color in cold winters, and is semi-evergreen/evergreen in warm winters! Don't worry, those showy berries stick around through winter (if your birds don't snatch them all up first!).
Landscape Application:
The compact, tidy habit and tight branching make for the perfect plant for any garden! Use these 3 - 4-foot tall shrubs as foundation plantings or facer plants that hide the lower legs of older shrubs or evergreen hedges!
Red Cushion spreads 4 - 6 feet wide and works as a groundcover because of its tight branching habit that blocks weeds! Will also work as a low hedge, winter interest plant and is great at hiding smaller eye sores and tough patches of bare ground.
Go big with a mass planting of these plants in a row or checkerboard pattern to cover an eroding or hard-to-mow hillside in beauty! Plant Red Cushion 3-4 feet apart on center for faster fill.
The thorny branches are fantastic deterrents and can be used to redirect unwanted foot traffic from 'desire paths' and keep trespassers at bay. Peeping Toms will think twice when a grouping of Firethorns are planted under first-story windows!
- Darling White Clusters of Flowers

#ProPlantTips for Care:
These shrubs do best in full sun to partial/afternoon shade locations and need slightly acidic well-drained soil to thrive. Once established, Firethorn handles occasionally wet to dry spells, clay, and salt/saline locations.
Firethorn flowers on old growth, so prune immediately after flowering to ensure flowers next year. If you don't wish to deprive yourself of any berries, use renewal pruning to snip out old branches and leave the younger, more vigorous stems behind. Just remember to wear sturdy gloves when handling the thorny stems!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade/Afternoon Shade
- Slightly Acidic Well-Drained Soil - Handles Clay & Saline Conditions
- Moderate Moisture When Young - Handles Drought & Occasionally Wet Sites
- Prune After Flowering/Renewal Prune - Blooms On Old Wood
- Deer Seldom Bother Firethorn
