Frequently Asked Questions

Is Coralburst crabapple the same as Malus 'Coralcole'?

  • Coralburst® is the trade name and 'Coralcole' is the cultivar name for the same crabapple, so you may see either one on a plant tag. It is an Ohio-bred selection grown for coral-pink buds that open to rose-pink semi-double to double flowers on a small, rounded, slow-growing crown.

Does Coralburst crabapple get apple scab?

  • Coralburst® can show apple scab, since its resistance to scab is only fair, though it holds up very well against fire blight, cedar-apple rust and powdery mildew. Humid summers raise scab pressure, so give it full sun and room on all sides so the leaves dry quickly after rain, and rake up fallen leaves in autumn.

How should I plant a grafted Coralburst crabapple?

  • Plant your Coralburst® crabapple with the graft union, the swollen knob where the top was joined to the rootstock, sitting above the soil line. Planting too deep can bury the graft, so dig the hole no deeper than the root ball and set the tree at the same depth it grew in its container.
