The Sound of Elms.....

I have three that surround my property. My Uncle planted them in the 1940's. They have been pruned severely over the years. I still love them though. All the negatives mentioned here apply. BUT they are still huge and beautiful and the shade is wonderful. AND what is never mentioned is the sound. They make the most amazing whooshing almost water sound when the wind blows. I love them....

My neighbor has had her tree for around 10 years. It's a lovely tree, but this year it has developed hard, woody nodules in the lower branches. any idea what these might be? The tree looks very healthy otherwise. She fertilizes it every Spring.

Slippery Elm Bark (whole) Uses

Having no experience growing Slippery Elm, Im trying to find plantings now. However, I would like to add important uses for the whole bark. When steamed, the whole bark produces a gelatin coating which is awesome in poultice. It will give you new faith in poultice & herbal effectiveness. Use the almost useless powder like maypo especially for stomach problems. I want to grow this in W. Washington. Thanks.

I have seen this beautiful tree before, the foliage is impresive is a magnificent tree.is seedless with strong, upright branches that are resistant to storm and snow damage, we do not get snow in our area, but gets could in the winter. My problem is that I dont know if I can plant it in sandy soil, I live in Florida west coast.what do you mean by "but it does not like poor compacted soils" Answer from Nature Hills: Poor compacted soil is just the opposite of light sandy soil. Compacted means clay or clay mixtures that are quite dense and reduce drainage and new root penetration.
