Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Geum performs best in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct light daily to maintain those vibrant orange blooms. While it handles partial shade in hotter climates, too much shade will lead to fewer flowers and leggy stems.
  • Soil: Aim for organic, well-drained soil that stays consistently moist but never soggy. If you have heavy clay, mix in several inches of compost or aged bark to improve drainage and prevent crown rot during the winter.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Tempo™ Orange Geum twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, this variety is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture usually results in smaller flower sets and crispy leaf edges. To keep the foliage looking lush and the blooms popping, provide about an inch of water per week during the heat of summer.

Pruning Tips

Because these plants bloom on new wood produced in early spring, you should deadhead spent flower stalks down to the foliage mound to encourage a second flush of color. In late autumn or early spring, remove any tattered, evergreen leaves to make room for fresh growth.
