Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Radiant pale yellow blooms await you! Every Rhododendron is pretty, but Holden's Solar Flair Rhododendron (Rhododendron 'Holden's Solar Flair') seems very special, with luminescent pale yellow blooms that burst forth from rose pink buds! Something about the combination of that gleaming yellow with the deep, glossy green leaves feels very fresh and modern!
Holden's Solar Flair is not without spice, either! Each bloom is daubed with a fiery "splotch" of garnet. Never overpowering, that red instead adds some extra "oomph" to this compact shrub. Plus it gives pollinators and Hummingbirds a bullseye to zone in on! Holden's Solar Flair Rhododendron is an easy selection to live with and loves all year around. Even after the blooms are done, the attractive broad-leaved evergreen is gorgeous year-round!
Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 8 where it is heat and cold-tolerant, maturing 3-4 feet in height and width! These flowering evergreens are fantastic spring bloomers and very easy to grow! The long glossy foliage is deep green and the entire shrub has a very tropical vibe!
Planting and Application:
Use Holden's Solar Flair as a standout specimen and focal point among your mixed shrub borders! As fantastic year-round backdrops and foundation plantings, these Rhododendrons kick your curb appeal up a few notches and are sure to get your landscape noticed all year long! It has a compact and exotic nature that makes it ideal as a container planting on your back patio, as poolside planting, as low privacy hedge, or in a porch planter, and is perfectly suited for smaller gardens as anchors and specimen plantings!
Create a low hedge near your patio or consider using them in pollinator borders, cottage gardens, modern plantings, and upscale urban gardens in the dappled shade. Solar Flair contrasts beautifully with other spring bloomers, like Iris and Peonies. Or extend a monochromatic display with overlapping yellow Roses such as Popcorn Drift® or Sunny Knock Out® that will bloom the rest of the growing season!

#ProPlantTips For Care
Rhododendrons naturally grow in the thin soil of mountainous slopes with good drainage and do well in part shade or sun. Remember not to plant these shallow-rooted plants too deeply. Mound them up in a hill of extra soil; leaving an inch or two of the root ball showing. They won't do well in poorly draining soil, but you'll need to plan to keep this beauty evenly watered.
Check on your soil by digging a hole and pouring a bucket of water into it. Does it take longer than 10 minutes to drain? If so, you'll need to improve the drainage by creating a mound or raised bed 18 inches tall. Amend the soil with pine needle compost and perlite pellets. You'll then bring a three-inch layer of mulch up around the base of the plant. Last, pull the mulch back away from touching the stems. Water consistently during the first season. Thereafter, you'll want to give them regular deep drinks when the weather gets dry. Once established, this is a low-maintenance shrub, and what a beauty!
Prune to shape, but wait until after the blooms are finished! Don't wait too long, as you might accidentally trim off next year's flowers. Weed your plantings regularly. Avoid underplanting near your Rhododendrons to give the roots room to spread. Feed with slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving, ericaceous plants. Follow the label directions for timing and application rates.

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to plant Rhododendrons?
Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.
How big do Rhododendrons get?
Holden's Solar Flair Rhododendron can grow 3-4 feet in height and width, when grown in optimal conditions.
Are Rhododendrons low maintenance?
Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.
What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?
All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
