Description
A hardy double woody Hibiscus! Maybe it was the August heat. Maybe it was the sunset colors reflecting in the swimming pool. Maybe it was the smell of the fresh-cut grass and the frosty beverage in hand. Nah. It was the Pink Chiffon® Rose of Sharon backlit by the setting sun. This was the start of a perfect evening.
The Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Pink Chiffon® Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus 'JWNWOOD4') is a late-season bloomer that is covered with cake-frosting-pink flowers on top of gracefully swaying stems. These little confections are double and frilly and remind us of the dresses you'd see at the prom, circa 1954. That was a good year for dresses and pretty girls.
This is a late starter in the spring, so don't worry if it isn't waking up with the rest of the garden. Like every girl on prom night, she is worth the wait! Related to Tropical and Hardy Hibiscus, the Rose of Sharon (also known as Althea) is just as tropical looking, easy to care for, and resilient! Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies will arrive to sip the much-needed nectar and collect pollen!
The modern Pink Chiffon® Hibiscus shrub will produce months of tropical-looking blooms with proper care. Low maintenance and hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these 8-12 foot tall trees only spread to a space-saving 6-7 feet in width at maturity. Planting and Application:
A single one becomes a magnificent specimen plant. Several planted together look amazing at the back of the border or along your fence line. Add Pink Chiffon® on the sunny side of evergreens to soften their look and add lightness and color. Or, count on their densely held branches to give you privacy, even during the winter months.
Lavish flowering hedges will pump up your privacy, and create "living walls" of a garden room. A single one becomes a magnificent accent plant. Several planted together look amazing at the back of the border or along your fence line. Pink Chiffon® could be the perfect choice for us as screening all along the outside of your pool deck fencing. Place four feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.

This tall, narrow variety performs well in almost any soil, except if it's too dry or too wet. This easy-care plant is a perfect choice, whether you are a beginner or have years of landscaping experience. Rose of Sharon loves sunshine! Plant it in a spot where they will get at least six hours of sunlight a day. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Use a three-inch layer of arborist mulch over the top of the root system to keep them nice and cool.
This pretty shrub blooms on new wood, so Prune Althea in early spring to either shape or control the height. You'll have flowers later that season, no matter how tightly you trim them in spring. You can even train these shrubs into multi or single-stemmed tree forms! Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.
Chiffon® Rose of Sharons actually hinders seed production, making this plant nearly sterile. Use Pink Chiffon® anywhere in your yard without worrying about nuisance seedlings.
