Where to Plant

• Sunlight: This perennial requires full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct light daily. Plenty of sun is necessary for the plant to produce its signature vibrant orange color and to ensure a heavy supply of flower spikes.
• Soil: Choose a spot with excellent drainage, as this plant will not tolerate "wet feet" or soggy conditions. If your garden has heavy clay, mix in finished compost or fine gravel to lift the crown and allow water to move away from the roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Mango Popsicle Poker twice a week to help the roots reach deep into the soil. While it is quite drought tolerant once it reaches maturity, providing supplemental water during extreme heat prevents the plant from becoming stressed. Inconsistent moisture during the peak of summer can cause the flower production to slow down or stop entirely.

Pruning Tips

This plant produces flowers on new growth throughout the season, so you should remove spent flower stalks as soon as they fade. Cutting the old stems down to the base of the foliage acts like a reset button, encouraging the plant to send up fresh blooms instead of producing seeds. In late winter or very early spring, trim back any tattered or brown leaves to make room for the new season of growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring just as the first green tips emerge from the ground. This provides the necessary nutrients for the upcoming bloom cycle without overwhelming the plant. Avoid applying high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer, because this stimulates tender new growth that can be easily killed by the first winter freeze.
