Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide this vine with full sun, receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Maximum sun exposure is critical for high sugar production and ripening the fruit properly.
  • Soil: Excellent drainage is the most important factor, as grapes will not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water. They perform well in rocky or sandy soils, but if you have heavy clay, amend it with organic matter to improve airflow and drainage.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply and consistently during the first year to help the vine establish its deep root system. Once established, Canadice is reasonably drought tolerant, though inconsistent moisture during fruit development can lead to smaller or shriveled berries. Apply water at the base of the vine rather than overhead to keep the foliage dry and reduce the risk of mildew.

Pruning Tips

Prune your vine heavily in late winter while it is fully dormant, removing up to 90% of the previous year's growth. Grapes fruit on new shoots that emerge from one-year-old wood, so aggressive pruning channels energy into producing large, sweet clusters rather than maintaining excessive woody growth. If you prune too late in spring, the vines may "bleed" sap, which is messy but generally harmless.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your vine lightly in early spring, just before the buds begin to swell, using compost or a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. Avoid heavy nitrogen applications later in the summer, as this encourages soft, leafy growth that will not harden off in time for winter and reduces fruit production.
