For that old-world flavor in pies, cobblers, preserves, sauces and other baked goods, you can't go wrong with Chipman's Canada Red Rhubarb (Rheum 'Chipman's Canada Red'). Ruby-red stalks of sweet goodness, hold their color when cooked.

It's rare that one would not find a formidable Rhubarb planted in any farmhouse garden. Those large heart-shaped, ruffled leaves shoot up in early spring. Reliable year-to-year growth from spring through frost. Sending up tall spikes of foamy-looking creamy white blooms, butterflies will appreciate them, unfortunately, it's best to remove the flowers so your plant will focus on leaves and storing food for the winter.

An easy-to-grow perennial in zone 3 through zone 8! Give Chipman's a sunny spot to grow and it will not disappoint! Fast-growing, these herbaceous perennials go from zero to fully leafed out in just a few weeks!

Planting and Application:

Harvesting can begin in early spring as soon as the stems get to about a foot long or more. Carefully pull out the largest individual stems harvesting only about 1/3 of the total stems at once, and then let the plants grow to replace what was harvested. Harvesting can continue until early summer or when the temperatures get hot which can stress the plants. Stop harvesting to allow the plants to remain strong for next year.

Canada Red's stalks are great cooked and preserved, while some even eat the stalks fresh! To harvest, just reach in and grab a stalk firmly at the base and give it a good sideways and downward yank. Snip off the green leaf part and you're ready to use the stalk! Red Rhubarb lends its beautiful color to preserves, baked goods and sauces. In some countries, they eat them raw, peeled and salted.

The ornamental features of Chipman's Canada Red go well beyond just their edible usefulness! The large, ornate, ruffled leaves are a sturdy backdrop for other plants and a formidable foil for anchoring your garden beds. Remember to discard the leaves because they are not edible, but we're sure you'll find other uses for the large leaves! They are great for composting too.

  • Edible, Flavorful Stalks
  • Sweeter Than Other Rhubarbs
  • Beautiful Bright Red Color
  • Fast Growing, Old Fashioned Variety
  • Smaller Mature Size

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Your Rhubarb plant may send up flower stalks but these should be removed right down to the crown if they develop as you do not want the energy to go into flower production. Plant in a location that is well-drained and in full sun. Remove the entire flowering stalk as they develop to keep the plant producing more leafy stems. Remove all foliage and stems as the plants turn yellow and are done growing for the season in late summer or fall. Keeping old leaves cleaned up also helps to discourage snails.

  • Full Sun
  • Moist Well-Drained Soil
  • Drought Tolerant & Adaptable Once Established
  • Remove Entire Flowering Stalks As They Develop
  • Clean Mound in Late Autumn
  • Very Easy Care - Perfect for New Gardeners
