Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones
Lucky Marble™ Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata 'Lucky Marble') is an incredible little shrub with tiny, fine-textured foliage that's glossy and touchably soft, unlike other Hollies that can have pokey margins. Compact and densely growing, Lucky Marble™ features varying hues of green all over the plant, creating a swirling verdant effect!
Lucky Marble™ forms rounded and mounded, low-growing shrubs that are great groundcover and edging that's soft to the touch and elegant. You'll especially enjoy this feature when the snows come around because these are evergreen winter interest!
Japanese Holly has petite blossoms in spring that call pollinators and are soon followed by near black berries that birds adore! Slower growing with evergreens isn't a bad thing! It just means that they are low maintenance and will never outgrow their boundaries!
Planting and Application:
Lucky Marble™ is an ideal groundcover shrub that spreads neatly, making it perfect for edging and as low, facer plants! Let them ramble and skirt around larger trees and shrubs that may have bare lower stems and leggy looking with age to cover them up, or to clean up the lines along a garden bed or border.
Plant in a large planter or container for a unique evergreen texture and color year-round. Use as low hedging and in rows along your home's foundation and in front of your other foundation plantings. These are great for erosion control and for planting atop steep hillsides, retaining walls, and for softening the hard lines of a stone wall.
- Soft, Fine-Textured Foliage
- Small White Flowers & Near Black Berries
- Compact Dense Mounded Growth
- Great Pollinator & Bird-Friendly Shrubs
- Low Hedges, Facer Plants, Edging, Borders & Containers
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Japanese Holly is a hardy, disease-resistant broadleaf evergreen that is low-maintenance and touchably soft. Plant in full sun to partial shade in a well-drained site with moderate moisture access. Prune if needed after flowering or shear into a formal shape.
