Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide 2 to 4 hours of morning sun or consistent dappled light throughout the day. While it handles deep shade well, a bit of morning light ensures the dark leaf markings remain vivid and helps the runners spread more effectively.
  • Soil: Aim for rich, humus-y soil that mimics a woodland floor. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in organic compost or peat moss to improve drainage and prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season to help the runners root and establish a thick groundcover. Mature plants prefer damp conditions but can tolerate brief dry periods once established. If the soil stays dry for too long, the plant will show its stress through drooping leaves and crispy brown edges.

Pruning Tips

These plants bloom on new growth that emerges in the spring. You should snip off the spent flower spikes at their base once the blooms fade to keep the "tapestry" of foliage looking tidy. Think of this like a quick cleanup that redirects the plant's energy from seed production into growing more lush leaves and runners.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring just as the new growth starts to peek through the mulch. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer season. Excess nitrogen late in the year triggers soft growth that will likely be killed off by the first hard frost before it has a chance to toughen up.

Vigorous shade groundcover with incredible color and texture! Running Tapestry Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia 'Running Tapestry') provides carpets of dense greenery and an abundance of white spark-like flowers in spring! These blossoms feed early emerging pollinators and have a pleasant light fragrance for everyone to enjoy!

Spreading similar to Strawberries, the scalloped foliage is bright green with a burgundy blushed center that develops burgundy veining after the first frost. Forming low-growing carpets, spires of airy white blooms rise vertically and look like starry sparks flying above the mats of green! Once established, en masse drifts of those white flower spikes are absolutely magical!

Foamflower are graceful natives and Running Tapestry is a tough cultivar that isn't often bothered by Deer or rabbits. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, these herbaceous perennials grow just 12-15 inches tall when in flower and just a bit wider at maturity, but they will politely create naturalized colonies in due time. In warmer, frost-free climates, Foam Flower can remain semi-evergreen!

Planting and Application:

Fantastic groundcover for shade, Tiarella does best if planted en masse or in groupings and then allowing them to spread rapidly by runners. Let Running Tapestry fill garden spaces between larger perennials and shrubs without worrying it will take over! Ideal along border fronts, sidewalk and pathway edges, naturalistic plantings, or in woodland gardens! The spreading and naturalizing nature of Running Tapestry looks great in your shaded Perennial and Cottage gardens!

Foam Flower is a natural shade garden partner for providing shelter to spring ephemerals and rambling throughout the dappled understory as facer plants, edging, and down hard to mow slopes and hillsides that may be having some issues with erosion. Allow the dainty foliage to spill over your planter and container edges or soften the hard lines of your shade retaining and rock walls! Pollinators flock to the early blooms!

  • Creamy White Spikes of Flowers Resemble Clusters of Tiny Sparks
  • Scalloped Green Foliage With Burgundy Centers
  • Pollinator Friendly Blossoms!
  • Burgundy Splashed Fall Color
  • Dramatic Dense Carpeting Groundcover, Weed-Blocking & Naturalizing

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Preferring full shade in hotter climates and partial shade in the cooler zones, Foam Flower does best when planted in consistently moist, rich soil that won't dry out completely. Not particular on type, all well-drained soils are favored! Top-dress the root system with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch and/or compost to keep them moist and enriched.

No pests or issues, these tough native selections carpet areas in lush greenery fast, and all year long! Not high on their nibble list, deer and rabbits usually leave Foam Flower alone unless desperate.

These are herbaceous perennials that will die back in the winters in cold climates but remain semi-evergreen in frost-free regions. Rake through the clumps in the fall to remove dead debris and top with additional mulch or compost, then prune or mow back the carpets in the early spring. Easy to transplant, you can expand the use of Foam Flower throughout the garden with ease by dividing clumps every 3-5 years.

  • Full Shade to Partial Shade/Afternoon Shaded Locations
  • Moist, Rich, Well-Drained Soil
  • Cannot Have Soggy or Dry Soil For Long - Especially During Winter
  • Prune Back Each Early Spring
  • Deer & Rabbit Seldom Nibble
