Also thriving. No problems to this point.

Finally Got A Tree that Thrives !

I'm writing this review because I finally got a cherry tree that is thriving after planting . I will always deal with Nature Hills for my Trees and plants from now on . I had been dealing with another place that sent me trees that were dying and then had to fight them to get a refund which they didnt want to provide .. Thank You Nature Hill for being honest and providing a healthy tree for me to plant. The fact that the tree comes in a pot with soil is the best way to buy trees , tree came filled with leaves , package well , I watered the tree when it arrived and then let it acclimate in a shaded area for a few days because we were expecting a heat wave here where I live , when the weather broke and had a few days of decent weather planted the tree and it has taken off growing over 8 inches in height..Very Happy and Pleased Customer and Would highly recommend Nature Hills. Thank You

Fruit production

I have found that the Black Tartarian flowers will droop if it does not get enough water, so I keep it moist, (do not overwater) especially during the bloom time. We gardeners have to be patient because this tree will not produce fruit for a couple of years after planting. BUT it is worth the wait!

Hi Ted,

Thank you so much for sharing your insightful experience with the Black Tartarian Cherry Tree! We truly appreciate you taking the time to highlight how important consistent moisture is during bloom time—it’s a great tip for fellow gardeners to prevent flower droop. You’ve also captured the essence of patience perfectly; indeed, while the wait for fruit can be long, the reward is absolutely worth it.

If you haven’t already, be sure to keep an eye on well-draining soil to avoid sogginess, as subtle overwatering can sometimes sneak in unnoticed. Mulching around the base can moreover help retain consistent moisture and protect the roots.

We’re thrilled you’re enjoying your gardening journey with this special tree, and if you ever need more tailored advice or tips to help it thrive, we’re just a message away!

Frequently Asked Questions

What hardiness zones are suitable for Black Tartarian Cherry Trees?

  • Black Tartarian Cherry Trees thrive in USDA hardiness zones 5-8. They require 700-800 chill hours to fruit properly, making them suitable for areas with cold winters. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil for best fruit production.

How tall does a Black Tartarian Cherry Tree grow at maturity?

  • Black Tartarian Cherry Trees typically reach 20-25 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide at maturity. These sweet cherry trees develop a lovely pyramidal canopy that provides excellent shade while producing abundant fruit. Plan for adequate spacing when planting, available at naturehills.com.

Do Black Tartarian Cherry Trees require a pollinator?

  • Yes, Black Tartarian Cherry Trees require cross-pollination from another cherry variety to produce fruit. Compatible pollinators include Bing, Rainier, Stella, Montmorency, Van, and Lapins varieties. Plant at least two different cherry varieties within 50 feet of each other for optimal fruit production.

Is the tree disease-resistant?

  • The Black Tartarian Cherry Tree has typical disease susceptibility for sweet cherry varieties. While not specifically disease-resistant, this old variety has proven reliable over time with proper care. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent common cherry diseases like brown rot and leaf spot.

How are trees shipped—bare root or container grown?

  • Trees from Nature Hills ship as bare root during dormant season (late fall through early spring) or in containers during the growing season. Bare root shipping typically occurs when trees are dormant and easier to establish. Check the product page at naturehills.com for current availability and shipping method for your Black Tartarian Cherry.
