Tree doing great

Blue Chinese Wisteria can be a showstopper once it gets going, so it's great to hear yours is off to a good start, Rosa. Keep up with any training or pruning to help it develop that beautiful tree form over time. Thanks for the update!

The tree is fine as of right now

The tree is fine as of right now. I wish it had been purchased years ago and were more established and mature, but that is no fault of the nursery and or delivery.

Wisteria is one of those plants where patience really pays off. Once it gets a few seasons of root development behind it, the growth and bloom show can be pretty dramatic. Thanks for the honest take, John, and we hope it puts on a great display for you in the years ahead.

Finally bloomed after 5 years

Finally bloomed after 5 years. Very hearty plant.

Five years of patience and then that first bloom, worth every bit of the wait with wisteria. Blue Chinese Wisteria can take its time establishing before it puts on a show, but once it decides to flower it rarely looks back. Thanks for sticking with it and sharing the update.

Pleasantly surprised!!

Super Fast growth!! This tree was just a tall skinny stick and the box was damaged to the point that I photographed it before opening. I put it in full sun and watered, and it had green growth the next day! I’ve had it a little less than 2 weeks and the top is already filled out with new crazy tendrils added every other day. I wish I had bought 2!!!

Wisteria has a way of surprising people once it decides to take off, and it sounds like yours wasted no time. Good instinct photographing the damaged box before opening, by the way. That kind of documentation is always worth having. Give it room to spread, because those tendrils are just getting started. Thanks for sharing the update, Leigh. The Nature Hills Team

Hearty tree, fast growing, blooms at year 4-5

I am writing this review just to let others know it takes a couple of years for the tree to produce flowers. I live in TN and I planted my tree and pruned as instructed. I never thought it would bloom and then on year 4, it started. This is a very hearty tree. I planted mine for two years then moved it to another area and have pruned it VERY aggressively and it remains. Blooming again in early Spring. It is considered invasive in TN so I would pick a different tree next time, but 5/5 stars overall for quality.

Updated Review

Only 10 days after planting, there's new growth! I think my Blue Chinese Wisteria is loving its new home. Thank you again!

Thank you for the kind review of your Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree. Plant in full sun, stake the trunk its first year, water deeply once a week, and prune right after bloom—next year’s buds form in summer. A yearly layer of compost keeps flowers reliable.

Blue Wisteria I

I have ordered several trees from nature hills.com. I’ve been impressed with every tree I’ve received. They are healthy and beautiful. I already have some growth on them in less than a month. Since the first couple I ordered, it has just encouraged me to order more. Just ordered some strawberries also. Should be receiving them soon. If there’s anything like the trees, I should have really good luck with them. Thank you so much naturehills.com.

Seeing new growth within the first month is a great sign, Steve. Wisteria can be vigorous once it settles in, so keep an eye on it and give it something sturdy to climb as it matures. Strawberries are a fun addition, and bare-root plants tend to establish quickly when they go in the ground right away. Thanks for continuing to trust us with your garden.

It started sprouting the day after I took it out of the box!

It started sprouting the day after I took it out of the box! It has been 3 weeks now and it has a whole bushel of new growth. It actually looks like a little tree. I can't wait to see it start blooming!

Three weeks in with a whole bushel of new growth is a great sign that it settled in well. Wisteria can really take off once the roots get comfortable, and that early sprouting tells you the tree arrived in good health. When bloom time comes, the blue-violet clusters on this one are genuinely worth the wait. Thanks for sharing the update, Alexandria!

It wasn’t Blue!

I purchased two blue wisteria a few years ago. Patiently waited for them to bloom. They finally did and they are purple. It was disappointing. I would buy one until they can confirm that it is actually blue. They were not cheap and it was a let down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are blue wisteria trees real?

  • Yes, blue wisteria trees are real - they're Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) trained into tree form with violet-blue flowers. This variety blooms on bare wood before leaves emerge, creating spectacular spring displays in Zones 5-9. Look for "standard" trained specimens to get the tree form without years of training work.

Are wisteria deer resistant?

  • Wisteria is generally deer resistant due to its toxic compounds that deer typically avoid. While no plant is completely deer-proof, established Chinese Wisteria trees rarely suffer significant browsing damage. For best results in deer-heavy areas, plant in full sun as specified and shop at Nature Hills for healthy, vigorous specimens.

What planting zones is the Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree hardy in?

  • The Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree is hardy in USDA Zones 5-9. This vigorous grower establishes quickly and adapts to a wide climate range. Plant in full sun for the heaviest flower production, and provide consistent moisture if you're gardening in the warmer zones.

How tall and wide will this wisteria grow at maturity?

  • Chinese Wisteria trees typically reach 15-25 feet tall and wide at maturity. As a standard (tree-form) specimen, it grows more predictably than vine types while maintaining vigorous growth habits. Plan for annual pruning to control size and maintain the tidy canopy shape.

Does Blue Chinese Wisteria need full sun or can it tolerate partial shade?

  • Blue Chinese Wisteria requires full sun to produce its heaviest flower clusters. While it may tolerate some partial shade, you'll get significantly fewer blooms. For the best violet-blue spring display, plant yours in the sunniest spot available at naturehills.com.

What type of soil does this wisteria prefer and what pH level is best?

  • Blue Chinese Wisteria adapts to most well-draining soils and tolerates a wide pH range from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline (6.0-7.5). It's quite forgiving about soil conditions once established. Avoid heavy clay that stays waterlogged, and add compost to improve drainage if needed.

How often should I water my newly planted Blue Chinese Wisteria?

  • Water newly planted Blue Chinese Wisteria deeply twice weekly for the first growing season. In Zones 7-9, provide consistent moisture during establishment, especially in summer heat. Once established, it becomes quite drought-tolerant and needs less frequent watering.

How much pruning does Blue Chinese Wisteria require and when should I prune it?

  • Prune Blue Chinese Wisteria twice yearly: summer pruning after blooming to control size, and winter pruning to shape the canopy. Since this is sold as a standard tree, the trunk training is complete. Focus on maintaining the rounded crown by removing crossing branches and spent flower clusters.
