Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: While this shrub grows in everything from full sun to full shade, you will see the best orange foliage color with at least six hours of direct sun. In deep shade, the leaves tend to shift toward a more muted green and flower production will decrease.
  • Soil: It is incredibly adaptable and handles dry or rocky soils better than most shrubs. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in a few handfuls of compost at planting to help the roots transition into the native soil.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your bush honeysuckle twice a week to ensure the root system establishes deeply. Once mature, this plant is remarkably drought tolerant and usually only requires supplemental water during extreme heat waves. If the plant stays too dry for too long, you might notice the vibrant leaf color start to dull or the edges of the foliage begin to crisp.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on new wood, so the best time for a haircut is in early spring before the new growth starts. Cutting the stems back by about one third encourages a fresh flush of the brightest orange foliage and keeps the plant from becoming leggy. This timing ensures you do not accidentally cut off the season's flower buds.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as you see the first hints of green breaking dormancy. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers after midsummer because this can trigger a late growth spurt. Soft, new growth late in the season is easily damaged by early winter frosts and can stress the plant's overall health.

Let's face it. Sometimes native plants just aren't that pretty or can get into trouble in the landscape. But here is a native cultivar that is both beautiful and easy! Well, the Kodiak® Orange Diervilla Dwarf Honeysuckle (Diervilla x KODIAK 'G2X88544') is a tough native cultivar that thrives in both sun and shade and is drought-tolerant. What a deal! But don't take that as it acting like a garden sissy. This shrub takes fall color seriously with its glowing orange fall foliage. It is like a beacon in the fall landscape. As a cultivar, Kodiak® Orange Diervilla is an eco-friendly ornamental that you can feel good planting in your garden!

From early summer through the fall, each delicate blossom features protruding, white stamens for an additional decorative note. You'll love the way the clusters of yellow, trumpet-shaped blooms stand out against the dramatic leaves! The Butterflies, native bees, and Hummingbirds adore your Kodiak® Orange because it boasts bright yellow flowers in early summer!

Fall isn't the only season Kodiak® Orange shines in, either. alternative to a typical burning bush, which you might have in your landscape now. The foliage color is most intense in spring and fall, with autumn tones taking on a fiery tone in the fall!

This Bush Honeysuckle, while related to the Vine and the Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) it isn't invasive. It plays well with its garden neighbors for sure! Add to that deer resistance, plus disease resistance, and it can even grow in dry shade! Combined with its long bloom time and gorgeous foliage, and you have a most excellent landscape plant! Growing 3-4 feet in height and spreading 4-5 feet wide, these vigorous and incredibly adaptable shrubs thrive throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 7.

Planting and Application:

We might go so far as to call Kodiak® Orange Bush Honeysuckle a "plant it and forget about it" plant if it wasn't so pretty! You'll notice these plants every day, although you won't have to fuss over them! Savvy gardeners can appreciate why low-maintenance plants are a great idea! Why not use this sun and shade-tolerant shrub as the mainstay of your easy-care garden design?

Consider this your "go-to" landscape solution to cover ground and fill wide, open areas with knockout color. Include these all along the mid-ground of your mixed shrub border or as low hedges. They'll make a fantastic contrast in front of flowering trees and taller shrubs.

Commercial and home landscapes can use these shrubs en masse in wide planting beds. Save a little room for a few bright flowering accent plants, and you'll be ready to relax in your space! They'll fill in your wide, open areas with brilliant color, butterflies and songbirds!

Use them as a solid backdrop for smaller perennials in a Butterfly Garden. Of course, you can also add them to your foundation planting for a bold foliage accent. What could be more captivating? The eye can't help but be drawn to such a dramatic color, so different from the expected greens and bright flower tones usually present. #ProPlantTips for Care:

You will have the very best foliage color when planting your Dwarf Honeysuckle in full sun where it will get 6 or more hours of sun a day. However, it will also perform well in partially shady areas. We've seen it do well even in shade situations. Provide a consistent, moderate amount of water on a regular basis for best results. It is adaptive to a variety of soils and quite hardy.

Every other year, add a top dressing of a three-inch layer of arborist mulch. You'll keep the root system cool and moist. Mulch between plants also helps keep new mass plantings weed-free. You can easily keep them manicured with regular pruning in early spring to shape or shorten them. Or, let it do its thing for a more natural look. Should you need to prune, do so in the late winter or early spring.

  • Grows Well in Full Sun, Part Shade or Full Shade
  • Wide Range of Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Regular Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune If Needed - Late Winter or Early Spring
