Blue Satin, the good and bad

The bush arrived in great shape, and grew rapidly with very little care. It was much 'bluer' than Blue Chiffon and Bluebird. One of my favorite shrubs ever, topping out at a good 10 feet tall and 7 feet wide, very shapely with virtually no pruning. The bad: At about 15 years old, it just didn't come back one spring. Happily for me, I had salvaged self-sown seedlings over the years, and I've planted several. If you don't want seedlings, there were only 3 or 4 a year so not a pest. Some of the seedlings were a smaller, more violet flower, some are pure white without a colored center. None of them were as beautiful as Blue Satin but they're still gorgeous. And free. I plan to get another Blue Satin, and give it a more protected area. The old one was in a windswept southwestern exposure.

Dear Loretta,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful and detailed experience with your Blue Satin shrub! We’re delighted to hear it arrived in great shape and grew so beautifully with minimal attention — it’s truly a spectacular plant, and your description makes it come alive. It’s wonderful that you've enjoyed its rich blue flowers and that the self-sown seedlings have offered you new, free growing joys, even if not quite matching the Blue Satin’s distinctive charm.

Regarding the loss of your original shrub after about 15 years, your insight about location—the windswept southwestern exposure—could definitely be a key factor. Blue Satin does appreciate some shelter from extreme conditions, so your plan to give the new shrub a more protected spot sounds ideal. We’re confident it will thrive again under your careful watch.

If you’d like, we’d be happy to also recommend some protective measures like windbreaks or mulching tips to support your next Blue Satin’s health and longevity. Please don’t hesitate to reach out anytime!

Love my blue chiffon rose of Sharon!

I moved to oklahoma two years ago and the blue chiffon rose of Sharon was one of the first plants I planted. Absolutely everyone loves it and comments on it--even my brother!

Hi Oklahomafarmgal,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon! We’re thrilled to hear how well it’s doing in your Oklahoma garden and that it’s such a hit, even earning compliments from your brother—that’s always the best kind of feedback. This lovely shrub really is a standout with its striking, ruffled blue blossoms that brighten up any space.

Since you're enjoying it so much, you might find it helpful to prune it yearly in late winter or early spring to keep its shape and encourage more blooms season after season. Also, ensuring it gets plenty of sunlight and moderate watering will keep it thriving in Oklahoma’s climate.

If you ever have questions on care or want recommendations for companion plants that pair wonderfully with Blue Chiffon®, don’t hesitate to reach out—we love helping green thumbs like yours grow amazing gardens!

We love hearing that it's been such a cherished addition to your Oklahoma garden and that friends and family (especially your brother!) are enjoying its beauty as much as you do. Summer and fall flowers

I like a plant that flowers later in the summer and fall. Seems like a lot of perennials only bloom in the spring. Blue Chiffon is very pretty.

Hi Jenn,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about the Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Shrub! We completely agree—it’s such a delightful plant to have for vibrant blooms later in the summer and into the fall, especially since many perennials tend to shine primarily in spring. Blue Chiffon’s charming blue blossoms add a unique splash of color when some other plants start to wind down.

If you’re looking to complement it with other long-blooming favorites, you might also enjoy plants like Russian Sage, Aster, or certain varieties of Sedum that extend color deeper into the season. Feel free to reach out if you want personalized suggestions—we’d love to help your garden stay beautiful throughout all seasons!

Hello Jenn,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful feedback about the Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Shrub! We’re delighted to hear that you appreciate plants that provide beautiful blooms later in summer and into fall — it’s true, many perennials tend to bloom mostly in spring, so having something like Blue Chiffon® to extend the flowering season adds a lovely touch to your garden’s color palette.

If you’re looking to enhance that late-season vibrancy even more, some companion plants such as asters, ornamental grasses, or late-blooming mums work beautifully alongside the Rose of Sharon to keep your garden blooming longer. Additionally, remember that providing consistent watering during hot periods and applying a balanced fertilizer mid-season can encourage more prolific flowering.

We’re so glad Blue Chiffon® fits your gardening style, and we’d happily assist if you want suggestions for other late-blooming plants or general care tips!

Blue Chiffon Rose of Sharon

I planted my Rose of Sharon on 9/9/10. It got 4 beautiful blooms that first summer end. So far this year it does not look there is any life in the plant. It is 5/16/11. It may be too early for this zone. I absolutely love the plant. Hope it comes back this spring.

Hello Kris,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon! It’s wonderful to hear that it awarded you with beautiful blooms last year—what a lovely start. You’re right that by mid-May, depending on your zone, the shrub might still be in its early stages of breaking dormancy. Rose of Sharon typically comes to life a bit later in spring, especially in cooler climates, so there’s definitely hope that it’ll start showing new growth soon.

To support your plant’s revival, you might consider gently scraping a small section of a branch to check for green beneath the bark—that’s a good sign of vitality. Also, give it time to warm up a bit more, keep the soil moderately moist, and consider a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to provide extra nourishment as spring progresses.

If you’d like, we’re happy to provide zone-specific care tips or help troubleshoot in case there’s something else going on. Fingers crossed your Blue Chiffon® returns thriving this season!

Hello Kris,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Shrub. We're thrilled to hear how much you love this plant! It’s quite normal for Rose of Sharon to leaf out and bloom a bit later in spring, especially depending on your local climate zone. Since it’s mid-May, it might still just be waking up from dormancy after winter—even more so if the spring here has been cooler than usual.

To help encourage growth, make sure your shrub’s getting ample sunlight (they love full sun to light shade), and consider checking the soil moisture. These plants enjoy well-drained soil that stays moderately moist but not soggy. If you haven’t yet, a light application of balanced fertilizer early in the season can also promote healthy leaf and bloom production. Additionally, trimming back any dead or damaged branches might help the plant put energy towards new growth.

Keep observing it as we move into warmer months—plus signs like tiny buds or new green shoots should appear soon, and pretty blooms typically follow. If after several weeks there’s still no sign of life, please feel free to reach out to us for a closer look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big do rose of sharon trees get?

  • Rose of Sharon shrubs typically reach 8-12 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide at maturity in zones 5-9. These adaptable shrubs can be pruned to maintain any desired size or even trained into multi-stemmed tree forms. Prune in late winter or early spring for best results.

How much does a sharon cost?

  • Rose of Sharon prices vary by size, typically ranging from $30-80 for container plants. Blue Chiffon® is a premium Proven Winners variety, so expect to pay toward the higher end. Check current pricing and sizes available at naturehills.com.

How to care for a blue spruce?

  • I notice there's a mismatch in your question. You're asking about blue spruce care, but the product information provided is for Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon shrub (Hibiscus syriacus). Could you clarify which plant you'd like me to write the FAQ answer for? I'd be happy to write about either: - Blue spruce care (though I'd need blue spruce product details) - Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon care (using the provided product information)

Does Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon need full sun or can it tolerate partial shade?

  • Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon performs best in full sun but tolerates partial shade well. Like most hibiscus varieties, it will produce more abundant blooms from July through September with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Plant in a location with morning sun for optimal flowering.

Is this shrub deer resistant?

  • Rose of Sharon shrubs, including Blue Chiffon®, are generally deer resistant due to their tough foliage and late summer blooming period. While no plant is completely deer-proof, these hardy shrubs rarely suffer browsing damage in zones 5-9. For best protection, plant away from deer travel paths and shop at Nature Hills for healthy, established specimens.

How often does it need watering?

  • Blue Chiffon Rose of Sharon is drought tolerant once established and needs minimal watering. During the first growing season, water deeply once or twice weekly. After that, supplemental watering is only needed during extended dry periods.

What type of soil does this plant prefer and what pH level is best?

  • Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon thrives in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0-7.5. This adaptable shrub tolerates various soil types from sandy to clay. For best blooming results in zones 5-9, ensure good drainage and avoid waterlogged conditions.

How much does shipping cost and do you guarantee live arrival?

  • Shipping costs vary by plant size and location, but most nurseries guarantee live arrival when plants are properly cared for upon delivery. Rose of Sharon is quite hardy in zones 5-9, so it typically ships and establishes well. Unpack immediately and follow planting instructions for best results.
