Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least six hours of direct sun daily to ensure the yellow horizontal banding remains vibrant and the stems stay rigid. In partial shade, the plant often loses its color intensity and may begin to flop or lean toward the light.
  • Soil: This grass prefers moist, well-drained soil but is highly adaptable to various types, including heavy clay. If your site has poor drainage, incorporate organic compost at planting time to prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water during the winter.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, give the plant a deep soaking two times per week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once the plant is established, it becomes quite drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. Inconsistent moisture during the heat of summer can lead to crispy leaf tips or smaller, less impressive flower plumes.

Pruning Tips

This grass blooms on new wood, so it requires a "buzz cut" in late winter or very early spring before new green shoots emerge. Cut the entire clump back to about five inches above the ground using sharp shears. This annual haircut clears away the dead tan foliage and makes room for the fresh growth to rise without getting tangled in last year's debris.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a general purpose, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring when you first see green growth appearing at the base. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers in late summer because this produces soft, weak growth that will collapse under the weight of winter wind or snow. A single spring application provides enough energy for the plant to maintain its structure and produce its signature late-season plumes.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Doing very best in full sun, Huron Sunrise tolerates some shade but won't be as strong and upright, possibly even falling flat. It will grow in almost any soil, from loose sand to heavy clay. Miscanthus is easy to grow and is a good choice for beginners. Adaptable to salt, drought and it's impressively hardy, tolerant, and resistant! Deer and rabbits rarely bother it.

An urban tolerant warm-season grass, Huron Sunrise won't start growing until the soil temperature warms up so have a bit of patience. Prune before growth starts to appear in early spring and remove built-up leaves and debris from the center.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Grows Anywhere, Even in Wet Soil
  • Plant in Well-Drained Soil
  • Adaptable To a Wide-Range of Conditions
