Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Aim for four to six hours of morning sun with afternoon shade, especially in hot climates. Plants grown in too much sun will scorch and wilt, while too much shade produces fewer flowers and weak, floppy stems.

Soil: Thrives in average, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage, or plant in containers filled with quality potting mix. Apply a two to three inch layer of shredded bark mulch around the base to conserve moisture and keep shallow roots cool. Flower color shifts from pink to blue in acidic soil that naturally contains aluminum.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply two to three times weekly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, maintain evenly moist soil throughout the growing season, watering whenever the top two inches feel dry. Cascade hydrangeas resist wilting better than bigleaf hydrangeas but cannot tolerate soggy, waterlogged conditions or extended drought, which will cause leaf scorch and reduced flowering.

Pruning Tips

Avoid pruning entirely except to remove dead wood in early spring after new growth emerges. Cascade hydrangeas bloom exclusively on old wood, meaning any pruning sacrifices flowers for the current season and often the following year. If mature plants become overgrown, selectively thin one-third of the oldest stems in late winter, cutting them to ground level rather than shearing the entire plant.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed once in early spring with a granular rose or flowering shrub fertilizer following package rates as new growth begins. For blue flowers, apply aluminum sulfate according to package directions to increase soil acidity. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers which promote lush foliage at the expense of flowers, and never fertilize after July, which encourages tender new growth that won't harden off before winter.
