Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 5-9
A fantastic dwarf flowering shrub, the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Lo and Behold® Ice Chip (Buddleia x 'Ice Chip') is a dwarf ornamental shrub with outstanding flowers that particularly attracts butterflies. Like all Butterfly Bushes, your Lo and Behold® Ice Chip is an irresistible lure to butterflies and Hummingbirds. Summer afternoons will find your plant literally covered in winged works of art!
This deciduous dwarf shrub has a neat, compact, mounded form that sends its pure white blooms up and out of the foliage all summer and into fall! The flowers consist of long plumes of tiny white florets, clustered together in an elegant fragrant, tapering display.
Even without its blossoms, your Lo and Behold® Ice Chip is a head-turner for its silver-hued aromatic foliage that stands out amid the average green of other plantings! Growing just 1-2 feet in height and 2-3 feet in width, these low-growing shrubs are fast-growing throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9. Pest and disease-free, these plants are also seldom bothered by Deer.
Planting and Application:
Lo and Behold® Ice Chip is a brilliant white bloomer, and the silvery foliage helps light up your garden beds and borders! Ideal Moon Garden shrubs and must-haves for the Pollinator border! The bridal white blooms mix happily into Cut flower gardens and Cottage gardens alike, but also tough enough for Xeric and Rock Gardens!
Ice Chip would look terrific in your mixed border or perennial bed, the neutral flower color blending into all other flower colors and home colors! Brighten a dreary evergreen hedge along your property line or foundation planting, the low-growing form acting as a facer shrub for leggier, older shrubs.
This dwarf shrub is the classic edging shrub! Line a pathway or driveway with these space-saving ornamentals. Hardy and adaptable, brightens even the smallest of courtyards and urban lots. Even container gardeners and patio gardens in the sun, and grow tidy enough for formal front porch urns!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Butterfly Bushes must be grown in full sun for the most blooms and the densest growth. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster in average, well-drained soil. Buddleia (sometimes spelled Buddleja) need regular moisture access during their first year but become low-water usage once established. Provide supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the flowers returning. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system to hold moisture consistently and insulate the roots.
Your Lo and Behold® Ice Chip is a dwarf variety of Butterfly Bush that is particularly long-blooming and naturally compact. It's a hardy little shrub that won't require a lot of fussing from you but is tolerant of pruning if you prefer. Acting as a perennial in cold climates and a woody shrub in warm winters, pruning is best done in the early spring, allowing you to cut them back to the ground and it will still regrow to full size each year. Butterfly Bushes are also drought tolerant and deer won't bother them unless very desperate.
- Shrub or Perennial Depending on Your Climate
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture & Fertility
- Deer Seldom Bother Them
- Prune In Early Spring
Unique, silver-hued foliage, magnificent flowers and a fragrance that is like ringing the dinner bell to every butterfly in your neighborhood...all in a single plant! It's truly a one-of-a-kind find. All in all, it's hard to find a more attractive shrub for your yard.
