Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant

Growing Zones 5-9
A radiant little shrub with dramatic, dark, yet vibrant blooms! The Chrysalis™ Cranberry Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x 'Balchryran') is a fantastic compact pollinator plant with deep cranberry/wine-colored pointed panicles that look like jewels rising above the mounds of green foliage! Each tiny floret that makes up these blooms is accented by a dramatic orange eye!
The abundant flowers bloom from late spring into the fall! The aromatic gray-green-to-green foliage is airy and fills out with tons of gorgeous foliage that is the perfect foil for the flowers! Standing tall atop the shrub every butterfly, bee, and even a few hummingbirds will find and easily land on them! Forming a wonderfully compact and space-saving shrub that's a delight to care for!
This hybrid Buddleia is highly adaptable and cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 - 9 and Chrysalis™ Cranberry grows to a neat and tidy mounded form that reaches only 20-28 inches tall when in bloom and spreads 18-24 inches wide. A hybrid Buddleia that is very resilient and root-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9 and can be stem-hardy in warmer locations. The fragrant blooms keep returning with regular deadheading, but that also means you will get more blooms for your bouquets and vase arrangments!
Planting and Application:
Chrysalis™ Cranberry is compact enough for containers and planters on sunny porches and patios where the jewel-tone blooms just shine! The smaller size is fantastic for use as edging and facer plants that add depth and drama to foundation borders, and evergreen hedges! Or add a decadent skirting around trees or shrubs that may be getting a bit leggy in their older age. Tough enough for Rock gardens and pretty enough for Rose gardens, Butterfly Bushes just glow in any setting!
Must-haves for Pollinator gardens, as backdrops or borders in wildflower installations, and lovely vertical cut-flowers for your Cutting Garden! Enliven Cottage and Perennial borders and add low-growing front-of-the-border color to your mixed shrub hedges! Greet guests by planting several along your walkway or driveway. Use at the corners of your landscape to draw flying visitors, as well as highlight a garden bench or accent your seating areas in the sun!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Butterfly Bushes do best in full sun, where they will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Buddleias do best in well-drained soil. They won't tolerate wet roots. Use containers or elevate the planting bed, if your soil drains slowly.
You'll enjoy the largest flower display if you can deadhead the spent blooms. Provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis, so it can grow to its fullest potential. Don't worry about the occasional vacation. These durable plants are water-wise! Deer don't prefer the taste, so they are rarely damaged. Deadhead throughout the growing season to keep blooms returning, and prune back in the very early spring. Tolerant of heavy rain, Chyrsalis™ Buddleia have a high drought tolerance once established and are downy mildew resistant.
Buddleia as a species may grow a bit too well in certain areas. Don't fear! We protect your local ecosystem with a software tool called Plant Sentry™. It helps Nature Hills follow all local, state, and federal regulations for plants that can become invasive.
