Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 5-7
Brilliant spring hot spot, the Nico Azalea (Rhododendron x 'Nico') will light up your spring with the most eye-catching cherry-red blossoms covering its dark green foliage! A broad-leaved evergreen shrub, you'll love the year-round greenery with the juicy burst of spring trusses full of flowers!
Nico Azaleas love the moist, deeply organic woodland settings and dappled shade gardens where they do best, blooming their hearts throughout April to May, much to the delight of every early migrating Hummingbird and early emerging pollinator in your area! For the remainder of the year, you'll get to enjoy the handsome steady green of its leaves filling out the dense, multi-stemmed branches of this shrub.
These Azalea are wonderfully cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 7, and are wonderfully space-saving ornamental shrubs! Growing only 2-3 feet in height and width, you'll enjoy having these neat and tidy balls of green and red anywhere in your dappled shade landscape!
Planting and Application:
Plant this brilliant bloomer anywhere you need a steady evergreen backdrop or year-round accent such as your partly shaded foundation hedge. Nico won't ever grow too tall and block your windows, but it will add year-round curb appeal to your home or an outbuilding. Use as a backdrop to shade gardens and Perennial beds, or along a walkway that gets morning sun.
The brilliant early spring display and all-season greenery make Nico Evergreen Azaleas the perfect plant for filling large swaths, rows, and en masse plantings with low-maintenance color! Plant 24 inches on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Fill areas in a zigzag or checkerboard pattern or in curving rows for the most dramatic show!
Nico Azalea is also perfect for tucking a vivid red spring blooming shrub in among a mixed shrub border or as an accent plant among your woodland and shade garden plantings to add their bright spring color among later blooming plants and shrubs! Even large planters and patio containers in protected areas are ideal for these lovely red blooms.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Azalea are members of the Rhododendron family and thrive in shade and moist environments. Provide dappled shade all day, or morning sun and afternoon shade for these plants. Plant in an enriched, slightly-acidic environment with moderately moist well-drained soil. Apply a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist pine bark mulch, extending out over the entire root system for the best moisture retention. This Vuyk hybrid Azalea stays compact and tidy on its own, but if you do need to perform any pruning, do so immediately after flowering.
- Partial Shade
- Enriched, Slightly Acidic Soil Conditions
- Regular Moisture Needs
- Prune Immediately After Flowering
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
The Nico Azalea is just the cherry-red punch of color you need to kickstart your landscape into spring! Hurry and order this fantastic smaller broad-leaved evergreen flowering shrub from Nature Hills Nursery!
