Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This perennial thrives in full sun, requiring at least six to eight hours of direct light daily to maintain its compact shape. While it can handle some afternoon shade, too much shade will cause the stems to stretch and lead to fewer bright yellow blooms.
  • Soil: Choose a spot with well drained soil, as this plant hates having "wet feet" during the winter. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or plant in a raised mound to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the roots establish a firm foothold in your garden. Once mature, this variety is impressively drought tolerant and typically only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. Inconsistent watering or overly soggy soil can lead to leggy growth and may decrease the overall lifespan of the plant.

Pruning Tips

Because this plant blooms on new wood produced during the current season, you should shear it back by about one third after the first heavy flush of flowers fades. This "haircut" encourages a fresh round of foliage and a second wave of blooms for the late summer. Removing spent flowers, or deadheading, prevents the plant from putting energy into seed production so it can focus on more flowers instead.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as new growth begins to emerge from the ground. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this can stimulate soft, tender growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost.
