Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best possible bloom production and color intensity, aim for at least six hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight daily. While they will tolerate partial shade, the tradeoff is significantly fewer flowers and a less dense, leggier shrub.
  • Soil: Lilacs prefer well-drained, fertile soil. If your area has heavy clay, incorporate a significant amount of compost or aged manure to improve drainage and aeration. If your native soil is highly acidic, sweeten it with a small application of garden lime, as these plants prefer a slightly alkaline to neutral pH.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, ensure your lilac receives regular, deep watering to establish a strong root system, typically equating to a soaking once a week if rain is scarce. Once established, this shrub is reliably drought tolerant, but inconsistent or severe underwatering during summer heat will cause stress, resulting in smaller blooms the following spring. Always water slowly at the base of the plant to penetrate the root zone deeply.

Pruning Tips

This type of lilac blooms on old wood, meaning the flower buds for next spring form right after the current season's flowering is complete. The optimal time to prune is immediately after the last blooms fade in late spring or early summer; pruning later will remove next year's flower buds. Focus on removing spent flower heads (deadheading) to redirect the plant’s energy into next year’s growth instead of seed production. To manage size or rejuvenate an older shrub, selectively cut out one third of the oldest, thickest canes right down to the ground.

Fertilizer Needs

Lilacs are not heavy feeders, and often, compost is all they need, but a boost can help in poor soils. Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 ratio) in early spring just as new growth begins. What to avoid is applying any high-nitrogen fertilizer (the first number is high) or feeding them past early summer. Excess nitrogen encourages lush green foliage at the expense of flower production, and late-season feeding promotes soft growth that is vulnerable to early winter frost damage.
