Hydrangea paniculata is an excellent, woody shrub that has massive panicle shaped blooms in summer and hold on into the winter. There are many selections that are available from Nature Hills that can be pruned using this method. The pruning should be done up until you start seeing leaves on the plant.
Pruning basically is simple. Once a year, late winter or early spring – remove about 1/3 of the tips of each branch into the body of the plant. Best to prune the overall form into a somewhat rounded form, and not a flat topped plant.
Hydrangea paniculata selections include Limelight (shown), Phantom, Quick Fire, Little Lime, Little Lamb, Firelight, Vanilla Strawberry, Diamond Rouge, Silver Dollar, Quick Fire, Pinky Winky, and Bobo all can be pruned using this method.
