Plant Sentry™
Plant Sentry™
Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.
This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.
Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

You'll sing the praises of this spreading evergreen that is super easy to grow! Introducing First Editions® Swing Low® Distylium (Distylium 'PIIDIST-VI' PP 29,779)! This Winter Hazel in the Witch Hazel family is a very handsome broadleaved evergreen for southern states!
There has been a lot of breeding done by Dr. Dirr, and this is the 5th and newest addition to the First Editions® Collection. New plants are released for a reason, and this selection has many!
Swing Low® differs from all the other selections in that it has smaller, and more delicate foliage. Shiny and dark green leaves are fine textured and beautiful. The broadleaf evergreen leaves have a bluish cast and they are very densely arranged all along the stems so the plants offer a classic look. The winter blooms are red and appear at a great time for pollinators to enjoy.
Swing Low is a low-maintenance no-brainer when it comes to care and maintenance - just so easy to grow! It is an evergreen and is resistant to insect and disease problems. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 7 - 9, there is never an issue with pests or diseases, heat or humidity, nor issues with issues that Boxwood, Laurel, Junipers, or Holly have in the South!
Planting and Application:
The spreading form of Swing Low® makes it the perfect plant to use in mass. The perfect ground cover with a very elegant look that just stands beautifully on its own. How about using Swing Low® as a low-edging plant to showcase your beautiful annual or perennial gardens?
What a perfect groundcover in front of your Rose garden! Looking for a low-growing foundation plant? Swing Low® quietly adds structure to the garden offering support year-round. This Distylium only gets 2 to 3 feet tall and can spread about 4 feet so it won't block your view!
Take advantage of its attractive foliage and tough demeanor by planting several in a mass planting or your woodland garden. You'll love Distylium as low screening and property definition, as backdrops and garden greenery, delightful facer plants, and more!
- Small, Fine-Textured Broadleaf Evergreen Foliage
- Attractive Year-Round Interest
- Blue-Green Leaves
- Petite Red Winter Blooms For Pollinators
- Fantastic Low Hedges, Backdrops, Containers & Specimens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Swing Low® Winter Hazel is wildly heat tolerant, and is not fussy about soils able to withstand both wet and dry locations. It can easily tolerate soils that are occasionally saturated but well-drained. Growing best in full sun or partial shade, top-dress the soil with 3-4 inches of mulch for moisture retention. Prune after flowering to shore up any wild hairs, but generally, Distylium are low-maintenance and naturally neat and tidy! You can renewal prune every 3-5 years instead of shearing.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Once Established Handles Wet to Dry Sites
- Any Well-Drained Soil Type
- Prune After Flowering If Needed
- Pest & Disease-Resistant
- Great Alternative to Boxwood
Swing Low® Distylium by First Editions® is an easy-to-grow landscape workhorse and that's the gospel truth! Sing the praises of this southern gem with the help of Nature Hills today!
