Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Do you want a ton of edible nuts, on a tree that's easy care and great taste? Of course you do! Sumner will give you that every year! The Sumner Pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis 'Sumner') is one of the best trees for homegrown pecans on the market! Rich and butterfly, these are Papershell Pecans that are easy to crack!

Candy, world-class pecan pies, and healthy snacking are within reach! And it all starts with greenish catkins in the spring, compound tropical-looking foliage all summer, golden hues in the fall, and then clusters of mottled smooth-shelled Pecans! You'll enjoy a late-season harvest of fairly large fruit, with nuts maturing in October to November; averaging over 50 nuts per pound!

Featuring a massive broad symmetrical, oval crown, this tree develops a distinctive upright form with age. This Type II Pecan, Sumner needs a Type I planted nearby for maximum yield. Sumner was a chance seedling found in Tifton, GA. around 1932 by Walter Sumner.

Planting and Application:

The spreading strong branches are ideal for use in windbreaks and shelterbelts! Handling the southeastern US climate best, Sumner will become a towering keystone species and legacy tree in the landscape! Not just for you and future generations, but for all walks of wildlife as well!

Many types of Lepidoptera use Pecan trees as Host Plants for their larvae, songbirds nest and roost in their canopy, and a wide variety of wildlife will help you use your harvest each fall when they need a reliable food source! Create groves that serve as sanctuaries for man and beast by planting multiple Pecan Trees together. Sumner pollinates with Desirable and Oconee Pecans beautifully!

Those strong branches also provide cooling shade over your home and garden, making them an excellent lawn tree! Reduce home cooling costs while adding generational curb appeal to your landscape with one of these mighty edible landscaping trees!

  • Type II Pecan Tree
  • Lush Green Compound Foliage
  • Broad, Tall, Oval Symmetrical Crown
  • Loads of Large Buttery Pecans
  • Beautiful Big Shade Tree - Largest Of The Pecan Family

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Commercial growers love Sumner Pecan Trees because they produce a lot of nuts, are more disease-resistant than most and stand upright and strong without a lot of pruning. Pecans like humid conditions with an extended warm late season throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 10 to ripen the nuts.

Give Pecan Trees a spot in full sun for best results. When you do your tree planting, plan to give a moderate amount of regular water during the first season and consistent moisture in a site with rich, well-drained soils. Provide young trees with a thick layer of mulch over the root system to help during drought, but these trees can be drought tolerant once established. Prune if needed when dormant.

  • Full Sun Trees
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Yet Regular Moisture
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Good Resistance to Pecan Scab

Big trees mean big harvests! And the Sumner Pecans are big on both! While it can take over 10 years from seed to enjoy your first harvest, Nature Hills ships trees that are already forming their tap roots 3-5 years of age, straight from our nursery! Hurry and order this fantastic nut tree for your food forest or urban landscape today from Nature Hills Nursery!
