Snowball bushes never go unnoticed, especially when they are in bloom! Their magnificent form and pom-pom-like blossoms have become a garden staple for many. Nature Hills has taken this amazing shrub and trained it into a single stem tree form for a lavish accent that's perfect for your landscape! Just like the bush form, you'll be amazed by the sheer amount of blossoms produced by one plant! It seems to defy the laws of gravity by how well its strong stems keep all of those blossoms elevated!
The Snowball Viburnum Tree (Viburnum opulus 'Roseum') is a stunning, upright take on the classic flowering bush! Each spring, this Viburnum Tree will have you reminiscing about childhood snowball fights with its absolutely immense blossoms of snow-white florets! Perfectly round and very compactly packed with petals, these mophead blooms fill the entire plant with glorious beauty! As the blooms mature, they will end up blushing a light pink.
Dark green, shiny maple-like leaves turn purplish and red for some impressive fall color. Songbirds will find ample shelter and nesting sites within the large arms of this ornamental tree. But unlike other Viburnum varieties, this sterile specimen won't produce messy seeds, so be sure to get your feathered friends a bird feeder to hang among the branches!
The Snowball Viburnum Tree will continue to be a showy aspect of your yard long after the blooms have disappeared. Once this tree's flowers have faded, the tree continues to be a gorgeous dark green color that makes for a very pleasing background to your summer flowering plants! As summer turns to fall, this tree will turn a stunning bright red before losing its leaves for the winter. That's right, three full seasons of interest all in one plant!
Planting and Application:
Viburnum Trees look amazing no matter where you put them, but make sure they are clearly visible so you and your neighbors can marvel at their beauty each spring! Deserving of a front yard planting all its very own, elevate this tree-form further by planting it in a high-profile area, on a berm accented by other mophead Viburnum or Hydrangea, or accenting the entry to your front door or porch! Ideal as an anchor to a foundation planting and adding height to an existing flowering shrub border!
Many Snowball Viburnum owners love snipping a few of the colossal blossoms and bringing them inside as decorations. They are also lovely when dried but nothing beats the display they put on when atop the deciduous dark green foliage. In fact, some say the leaves are just as grand as the blooms!
For backyard locations, any sunny site becomes an enchanted garden when these big, flouncy pillows of delight are in bloom! Add to Moon Gardens, mystify a Children’s Garden, elevate a Cottage border in more ways than one, and anchor a Pollinator garden to feed all the butterflies! Adaptable to moist to occasionally wet soil, water features and Rain Gardens become secret gardens! Reflect one of these trees against a water feature or Zen garden for peace and serenity amidst a hectic world!
Why not have a side yard transform into a winding path, lined in nodding grasses, fragrant Roses and cheerful perennials, leading to a Snowball Viburnum tree shading a garden bench or bistro set? Magical!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Taking care of a Snowball Viburnum Tree is quite easy too! They appreciate being planted somewhere they can be fully in the sun but they'll also do well with some partial shade. Unlike many flowers and plants, this tree is tolerant of wet soils. Mulch the root system well with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips, but be mindful not to allow them to pile up against the trunk. Prune only after flowering to clean up the plant and deadhead, and in late winter or early spring you can prune the oldest stems out entirely when necessary to rejuvenate growth.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Rich Organic Well-Drained Soils & Mulch
- Tolerant of Average to Wet Sites
- Prune After Flowering
- Deer Don't Prefer The Taste & Juglone Resistant
- Sterile Blooms - No Seeds
- Easy-Care & Low Maintenance
If you're a Snowball Bush lover or even just an interested gardener with an eye for eye-catching blooms, you'll want to have a Snowball Viburnum Tree for your yard! Order one of these unique specimens today before they're sold out at NatureHills.com!

When Do You Prune Flowering Viburnum Shrubs?
Viburnum shrubs bloom on old wood, so it is very important to only prune them immediately after the flowers fade. Should you wish to enjoy the fruit that forms after the flowers fade, then do not prune, instead remove one-third of the oldest, fattest stems that are no longer as vigorous. Pruning them out at the ground level. This leaves fruit for birds and winter interest and increases overall plant vigor while reducing the size of your shrub.
Do Viburnums Like Full Sun or Shade? What is the Best Location for Viburnum?
Viburnums in general need full sun for the most fruit and flowers, but also do well in partial shade and afternoon shade.
