The underutilized flowering Rock Rose are unique flowering broadleaf evergreen shrubs! Featuring bright white blooms with red darts and yellow centers, the Snow Fire Rock Rose (Cistus x 'Snow Fire') is a standout example of these curious plants!
Featuring reddish-bronze new growth and reddish stems, the green leaves feature a unique wavy edge! Pollinators adore Snow Fire's soft, five-petaled white flowers that have a brilliant yellow center that really pops against the white and green backdrop! Add the burgundy red darts at the base of each petal - and you have a striking bloom!
Sometimes spelled as one word Rockrose, the evergreen Rock Rose shrub easily endures the sun, heat, and humidity of USDA growing zones 7 to 11! Forming a mounding, spreading form that rarely grows taller than 4-5 feet and spreads 4-6 feet. Deer and drought seldom bother this hardy shrub but pollinators and bees flock to these pollen and nectar sources!
Planting and Application:
Rock Rose are one of the best plants for weed suppression! Plant anywhere you want a pretty, heat-tolerant living mulch in groupings, rows, or as en masse spectacles! Plant Rock Rose on hillsides that are difficult to mow, or on eroding slopes to slow rainwater runoff and soil washout and hold soil in place with their strong roots.
Use this as a wide groundcover or accent to the flowers and other shrubs to maximize your Rock Garden's potential. After all, Snow Fire is drought tolerant and a great Xeric plant once established! Salt tolerance reigns true as one of the most useful aspects of hardiness on display alongside this plant's beautiful opalescent blooms. Coastal gardens are sure to benefit from the hardy addition of this fine shrub.
Dry gardens will get a surprise burst of color that will laugh in the dry seasons! The manageable size of this Rock Rose means it fits in most containers! Use one or several of these container shrubs to add spots of delicate color to your porch or growing area.
The evergreen nature of the Snow Fire Rock Rose means it makes for fantastic year-round and winter interest. Use this to your advantage when planting to add a splash of green and gold where your yard will need it most in the winter months.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
While naturally hardy, soil selection can be an important part of keeping your Rock Rose happy and healthy. Avoid poor-drainage soils that retain lots of water to avoid drowning your shrub. This shrub absolutely adores the sun! So be sure to give it loads of sunshine. Rock Rose may need the occasional pruning throughout its lifetime. Clay soil-tolerant, and dry, rocky, sandy conditions won't faze these plants, but Rock Rose is sure to benefit from 3-4 inches of arborist mulch.
When pruning, be sure to wait until flowering has finished to prevent damage to next year's flowers. While it does well enough on its own this shrub's growth could benefit from the occasional use of fertilizer. Once the frost of early spring ceases for the season you should fertilize your Rock Rose shrub for maximum fertilizer potential.
