Growers have been hard at work producing new types of plants for home use, and their results have always been in high demand! The Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon Tree Form (Hibiscus syriacus 'SHIMCR1') is no exception, taking the best parts of the traditional Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon Shrub and turning it into an elevated tree form!

This particular type of tree-form Rose of Sharon is one of a series known as the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Shrubs. These specialty shrubs are selected from a wide variety from around the world as the best options to grow stateside.

This tree form of the Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon boasts rich pink ruffled flowers with an intense burgundy red eye at its center. Flowering all summer and into the fall, this seedless variety sports double flowers towering atop long stems adorned with glossy green leaves and short internodes making a great natural accenting background.

While the Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon Tree Form sounds more like a Tropical Hibiscus than a temperate-loving Rose of Sharon, this adaptable plant has a surprising knack for growing well in some of the colder growing zones. Also known as Althea, they are able to handle temperatures of up to Growth Zone 5, this hardy little tree is a great way to add some tropical flair to your temperate area garden.

Planting and Application:

The Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon tree form is a beauty and a fantastic addition to any grower's garden space. This nice, full bushy plant can fit a variety of gardening needs based on how you groom it. Its tight natural growth pattern paired with a little bit of yearly pruning could make this a fantastic filler piece between larger flowering trees and shrubs.

The upright spire growth of the Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon Tree Form also means it is the perfect fit for many types of containers and planters! These containers could be used to flank entrances to your garden or home, but with proper pot, coloration could give any guest a warm welcome from its imagery alone!

The medium size of this Rose of Sharon means it could be used as a screen or border for larger plants or a specimen centerpiece bordered by smaller flowering plants. In either case, the pink ruffled flowers accented with foliage and varied colors of blooms have a high potential for mind-blowing imagery.

Consider island planting with a variety of other flowering tree-form shrub plants for many medium-height blooms of a wide chromatic selection. This method helps maintain a healthy amount of clear yard while adding focal points to your growing area.

This shrub's attractive blooms make for a great addition to any pollinator garden! Large and showy, the overlapping flower petals form a gorgeous canopy irresistible to a wide variety of butterflies and Hummingbirds.

  • Deep Pink, Semi-Double Ruffled Flowers with Burgundy Eye
  • Double Flowers Tower Upright on Long Stems
  • Long-Lasting Blooms Displayed from Summer to Fall
  • Glossy Green Foliage
  • Tall Growth Pattern Makes Great for Tight Spaces
  • Beloved by Pollinators

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This Tree Form Rose of Sharon prefers well-drained, medium-moisture soil. This in tandem with full sun will contribute to the longevity of your plant. It sure does love to have fun in the sun! Those looking to minimize cleaning up after their garden's flower seeds will appreciate the lack of mess left by the Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon Tree Form. The tree is seedless!

Don't forget that airflow can be important to a plant's growth! Rose of Sharon tends to appreciate well-circulated areas and responds with hearty blooms, strong stems, and higher disease resistance. Fertilizer is a great way to help this plant's growth! It'll appreciate an application of slow-release fertilizer quite a bit! Give them a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over the root systems. Don't let the mulch touch the trunk, pull it back for proper air circulation.

With the spire-like growth patterns of the Ruffled Satin® Rose of Sharon Tree Form, it may be in your best interest to prune this plant to fit your garden's needs. No need to worry though, pruning is easy! Just as your tree is starting to wake up in the spring, grab a pair of sharp pruning shears and, with clean cuts, reduce the overall size to a two to three-foot rounded sphere. If you have an older Rose of Sharon Tree Form, you could keep a three to four-foot rounded sphere. Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

Once the growing starts though, you'll want to put the shears away so as not to damage the flowers that'll form on that new growth.

Although rated as deer resistant, we always recommend that you spray repellent on all new plants if you live with deer pressure. Deer are hungry and curious, so you'll want to reapply according to the directions.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture In Well-Drained Soil
  • Tolerant of Many Different Humidities, Soils & Salt Levels
  • Deer & Rabbits Aren't Impressed
  • Easy Care & Adaptable
  • Nearly Seedless Non-Invasive

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don't forget to check which form you're getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
