Like its namesake, Zipper Coral Bells (Heuchera x 'Zipper') is a perfect way to bring together your plantings. Fabulous, ruffled-edged leaves are an incredibly bright orange color mix and make an extremely satisfying presentation in both summer and winter. You'll be dazzled by the variation in tones when the sunlight hits those ornate leaves!

As the season progresses, you'll start to see gold tones, with magenta and reds showing, too. In areas with a warm climate, Zipper offers plenty of winter color. Heuchera is an outstanding native hybrid perennial that stays low to the ground. This special cultivar spreads wide and fills into a lush carpet of color and distinctive texture.

Rising above the ruffled, glossy leaves, creamy-white flowers held along a long wand start their delightful show in spring. Fantastic cut flowers for bouquet filler, and outdoors your Hummingbirds adore Zipper Heuchera's nectar, as do butterflies and essential pollinators! Hardy and low-maintenance throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9.

Planting and Application:

Tuck this ground-hugging perennial into bare spots to softly spread into an electric golden-amber accent. Maximize the visual impact for guests as they approach the front door. With showy, highly textured foliage, you'll have a thrilling composition that connects all the elements together for very little effort. Use them en masse, or start a Coral Bells collection from our extensive online catalog!

Use them front and center along the edge of your patio planting. Create a coordinated look with a few Zippers used as "Fillers" in your patio containers, too! They add an eye-catching layer underneath mature evergreens. Plant several in a long ribbon, spacing them eight inches apart for a fast fill. Versatile and durable Zipper Coral Bells look exceptional in low-maintenance Rock Gardens. Why not leverage their texture in a mass planting to decorate your space?

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This Perennial performs just as well in shade, where the vivid hue brightens up dusky corners. This particular cultivar performs in full sun and well-drained soil. Provide an even schedule of moisture and ensure they'll live in well-drained soil, then pull a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around to cover the root system. Be careful not to plant the crown too deep...leave about an inch of the nursery dirt showing as you plant, then pull mulch around to cover. Use Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for the life-long support of the tiny feeder roots. Keep the foliage intact until early spring before pruning away winter dieback and cleaning the mound.

  • Full Sun, Partial Shade or Full Shade!
  • Good Winter Interest/Evergreen in Warmer Zones
  • Moderate Moisture & Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune in Early Spring
  • Very Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prune Coral Bells?

Coral Bells do best when pruned in the early spring. Leaving the foliage intact as an extra blanket for winter protection over the crown. In some climates, Coral Bells can be semi-evergreen, so leaving those colorful leaves up all winter adds winter interest!

Do Coral Bells spread?

Coral Bells can spread into tidy mounds about 2-3 feet in width but do not spread by rhizomes or stolons further than where they're planted.

Where do Coral Bells grow best?

Coral Bells love a shaded site in enriched soil that is well-drained. They appreciate regular moisture and a mulched root zone.

Do Coral Bells attract hummingbirds?

Coral Bells are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.

What pairs with Coral Bells?

These shade-loving perennials pair with lacy Astilbe and Ferns, other coarse foliage plants like Hosta, and the lobed foliage of Columbines! Try pairing with Barrenworts and Bergenia too!
