When a plant is this classic and well-behaved, it winds up being grown in almost every community across USDA Growing Zones 4 - 8! The Hicks Yew (Taxus x media 'Hicksii') is a popular shrub that forms a thick, bushy barrier that won't lose its color or foliage in winter!

A real favorite with professional landscapers, the Hicks Yew may not turn heads as a specimen plant, rather, with its dense, dark and shiny green needles, these plants make a fantastic vertical screen or background. It's a perfect "supporting actor" for showier plants.

Often called the "backbone" of landscape design, evergreens such as Hicks Yews work hard to provide year-round structure, privacy, and property definition. They are easy-care plants that work in sun, shade and everything in between!

The outstanding upright form of this evergreen shrub has a loose, columnar shape that is wider than it is tall. This improved variety grows faster than English Yew as a young plant. Yews are generally very long-lived plants. A beloved specimen in Scotland is 5,000 years old!

We bet you have dozens all around your neighborhood! Keep your eyes out for these attractive, easy-care workhorses!

Planting and Application:

There's a reason that landscape artists use the Hicks Yew for so many purposes. This lovely evergreen looks great planted along your property boundary or in a line beside your pool for a bit more privacy. Plant them 18 inches apart (measured from trunk to trunk), so they'll grow together as a single screen.

Hicks Yews make handsome partners flanking opposing sides of your entryway, outdoor room, or garden entrance. Plant them to shield your patio from prying eyes, and to provide shade from late afternoon sun in the Zones 3 - 5.

It can also be used as a foundation plant at the corner of your house. There, its narrow growth habit and uniformly dense foliage will ground the home with the surrounding landscape beautifully and very effectively!

They make incredible backdrops for your perennial border, wildlife, or woodland garden. Try them in large containers, for portable screening. If you buy larger plants, you won't have as long to wait for your new privacy screen!

Give them enough room to grow into their full mature size. Yes, you can prune them - but if you plan for their full size, you'll be happy in the long run! You can let these shrubs grow naturally without being sheared and therefore allowing the berries that birds go crazy for to form among the branching!

  • Dark Green Thick Evergreen Shrubs
  • Birds Love The Shelter & Food
  • Takes Hard Shearing Or Can Be Grown Naturally
  • Tall Columnar & Narrow Form
  • Long-Lived, & Resilient & Hardy!
  • Great Topiary Specimens, Privacy Screen, Outdoor Garden Rooms & Backdrops

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The English Yew can take just about anything you throw at it, from artistic topiary pruning to poor city environments. These dark green plants grow well in any drained soil. Full sun or shade makes no difference, they'll do just fine in any sun exposure! All evergreens appreciate mulched beds 3-4 inches deep and a good drink before the winter months.

You can prune or shear it to control the height, but that's just a quick job once it reaches the height that you would like it to be. Some like to prune the tops into a point for a narrow formal pointed evergreen. Or, let it grow naturally into tall hedges. Older plants can be rejuvenated by trimming out longer portions of the plant back to a part of the stem that still has needles on it.

  • Grows Well in Sun or Shade
  • Wide Range of Well-Drained Soils
  • Moderate Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Prune or Shear After Flowering
  • Low-Maintenance & Easy to Grow!

This plant is a great example of the head start you'll get when you buy larger plants. For the Hicks Yew, buy as large a container size as you possibly can. You'll definitely appreciate the larger impact it will have in your yard.

Lushly thick, the columnar Hicks Yew is an impressive evergreen! Order enough to complete your project today from Nature Hills. Like so many others, we know you'll love this classic choice!

Hicks Yew

I have five that are eleven months old and they all made it through the winter looking great. All five of mine are in the shade from October until early April.

Dear Lee,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Hicks Yews! We're thrilled to hear that all five have weathered the winter so well and are thriving, especially with the shade they receive from October to April. Yoo;aee sounds like you’ve established a perfect environment for them to flourish.

If you’re ever looking to optimize their growth as the seasons change, be sure to monitor the soil moisture consistently. Hicks Yews prefer well-drained soil, and with shade in part of the year, they usually appreciate watering when the top inch of soil feels dry. Also, a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage dense, healthy growth.

Should you need any tips or have questions as your shrub collection grows, we’re always here to help!

Hi Lee,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Hicks Yews! We're delighted to hear all five have thrived through their first winter and are looking great. It sounds like the shaded location you’ve chosen from October to April is really working well for them — Hicks Yews do appreciate some protection from harsh winter sun, so your setup is spot-on.

As you continue caring for them, make sure to keep an eye on soil moisture — they like well-drained soil but don’t want to dry out completely, especially as they establish. If you ever want tips on pruning or preventing pests, feel free to reach out or check out our comprehensive plant care guides right on our website.

Thanks again for feeding back; nothing inspires us more than knowing our plants are flourishing with fantastic gardeners like you growing them!

Finally
thrives in part shade

I bought 3 last spring to put in front of my garage which doesn't get a lot of sun. Tried boxwoods & hollies before that didn't make it. They slowly died off. So far, so good with these yews. I think i have finally found an evergreen to make in a shad area.

Dear Finally,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Hicks Yew! We're delighted to hear that these yews have thrived in your part-shade garage area after your challenges with boxwoods and hollies. Finding the right evergreen for tougher spots can be tricky, so it’s wonderful that you’ve found one that works well for you. As yews generally appreciate some morning sun or dappled light and well-drained soil, it sounds like you’ve simply provided an ideal environment.

To keep your yews looking their best, make sure to check the soil moisture to avoid overly soggy conditions and consider mulching to help retain soil nutrients. If you’d ever like tips on pruning or winter care, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!

Wishing you happy planting,

Hi Finally,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Hicks Yew! We're delighted to hear that these evergreens are thriving in your part-shaded spot, especially after your previous challenges with boxwoods and hollies. Hicks Yews are indeed wonderful plants for adding year-round greenery in areas with less sun.

To help your yews continue to thrive, be sure to keep the soil well-drained and avoid overwatering, as they are prone to root issues in soggy soil. You might also consider applying a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and protect their roots through seasonal changes. If you ever want to explore companion plants that tolerate shade well, feel free to reach out — we're happy to help!

Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills and for your thoughtful review. We’re cheering on your shade-friendly garden success!

Hedge

Hicks yews are great for a hedge and I keep mine trimmed just like I like them and they do not take much work to keep them attractive.

Dear Cheri,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Hicks yews! We’re delighted to hear that they make such a wonderful, low-maintenance hedge and fit perfectly with the trimming style you prefer. It's always gratifying to know these plants are living up to their reputations and helping transform gardens in easy, attractive ways.

If you ever want tips on the best techniques to keep them healthy or innovative hedge designs, don’t hesitate to reach out. Also, be mindful to trim during late winter or early spring for best shape retention and to avoid inducing too much new late-season growth that can be vulnerable to freeze. We’re always here to help with any questions or support you might need.
