Fast Growing Yellow Blooms

The Yellow Trumpet Creeper, Campsis radicans 'Flava', is a rapid growing, clinging vine that produces yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers in the summer months; is a favorite for attracting hummingbirds, bees and butterflies in summer.

Trumpet Creepers flower best in a full sun location and it is a tough vine for hot and dry sites. The invasive nature of this plant makes it hard to get rid of, but it is also very hardy; they are self-seeding which produces suckers making them sometimes aggressive growing vines.

The abundant sprays of trumpet-shaped yellow flowers cover this deciduous vine for an extra long bloom season. The rapid growth makes training easy, and therefore, it is excellent for covering fences or arbors. The 'Flava' cultivar is considered by many to be the superior of the species.

Use Yellow Trumpet Creeper for screens for patios or cover for fences, walls, and arbors.

trumpet vine question

I have a question regarding the trumpet vine , we have rather large pods coming from inside the flowers what are we to do with them ? should we take them off and plant them? let them fall where they may? are there seeds in them? if we break them open do we then plant them or what?Thank youAnswer from Nature Hills:It s a vine and I think one plant is enough; you can leave them on the plant and let mother nature do her thing.

Hi Redrobin,

Thank you so much for reaching out with your thoughtful question about your Yellow Trumpet Creeper! It’s wonderful to hear you’re paying close attention to your plant’s growth. Those large pods you’re seeing inside the flowers are the seed pods of the trumpet vine. They indeed contain seeds that can be planted if you wish to propagate more vines.

You have a few options: you can let the pods mature and fall naturally, allowing nature to disperse the seeds. If you prefer a more hands-on approach, you can carefully remove the pods once they’ve dried, take out the seeds, and plant them in well-draining soil, keeping them lightly moist until seedlings emerge. Just be aware that trumpet vines can be quite vigorous, so once established, they may spread quickly — many gardeners find that keeping just one plant trimmed and controlled is often enough to prevent overwhelming other plants.

Hi Nattie,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Yellow Trumpet Creeper! We're delighted to hear how quickly it’s taken off and admired how proficiently it covers your fence or trellis. You brought up a great point about regular trimming—indeed, this vine can be quite vigorous, so frequent pruning helps keep its growth in check and maintains a beautiful, neat appearance.

If you ever want tips on the best times or techniques for trimming, we’d be happy to help. Typically, pruning in late winter or early spring encourages healthy growth for the season. Also, monitoring for suckers around the roots can prevent unwanted spread if that becomes a concern.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review. Happy to have your Yellow Trumpet Creeper thriving with such care!

Wishing you happy planting,
