Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 3 - 7
Soft and soothing cool-blue hues! The gorgeous frosted silvery green-blue flat scale-like needles of the Wichita Blue Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita Blue') have a silvery fluffy texture that grows into a narrow profile of moderate height, once mature.
Slim and pyramidal in form, Wichita Blue is a type of Rocky Mountain Juniper with upright growth and densely packed needles. Ideal for smaller landscapes and tight spaces, this is a fantastic specimen shrub that can tolerate strong winds and full sun with ease!
Decorative and highly ornamental, Wichita Blue Juniper is a coniferous evergreen that thrives throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 7 and can reach 10-15 feet in height, and about 4-6 feet wide once mature. This unique shrub shines once the snow begins to fly.
Planting and Application:
Wichita Blue Juniper is a fantastic evergreen that lights up the landscape with its unique and soothing coloration! The year-round color is sure to stand out as a focal point that will add height to a garden bed or border, and even more so as groupings that glow all year round. Pot them up in large planters for a front-entry seasonal thriller that looks great year-round!
Use as part of a snow barrier, as privacy hedges, radiant backdrops, and Moon Garden accents, the pyramidal form pops when mixed with white flowering shrubs, yellow perennial flowers, blue and purple flowering and foliage plants, and other fine-textured shrubs. The hardy nature of these shrubs makes them ideal specimens in a Rock garden as they can be quite xeric and drought-resistant once established.
Brighten a mixed-shrub border, or use these shining stars as a single-species hedge that works fantastically along a narrow stretch of ground, between your home and a fence, or along a walkway without blocking your path. Create outdoor garden rooms by surrounding yourself in the noise-canceling silvery colors and swaying motion of these fine-textured shrubs, creating a Zen-like atmosphere with ease!
- Silvery Blue to Blue-Green Needles
- Slim Pyramidal Form
- Great For Small Properties & Narrow Locations
- Fantastically Ornamental Color All Year!
- Hedges, Backdrops, Specimen Plantings & Large Planters
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Juniper shrubs are wonderfully easy to grow and have the best color when planted in a full sun site. Provide regular moisture and a well-drained site for new shrubs, but once established, Juniper bushes can be drought-tolerant. Give shrubs in hotter growing zones and in xeric conditions a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch.
These male plants won't have any seedpods in the fall, but an early spring pruning or shearing is best if you wish to give these shrubs a trim. Save larger trimmings to create lovely winter wreaths, swags, and other winter arrangements and décor!
- Full Sun Shrubs
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
- Appreciates Mulched Beds & Early Spring Pruning
- Provide Good Air Circulation For Best Results
