Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Beautiful native flowers and blue-green foliage, the shrubby perennial native White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba) is a white-flowering form of the famous Blue False Indigo! Pure white pea-like flowers loosely fill the tall spires that rise above the mounds of airy foliage that look like three teardrop shaped leaves joined together.

Waving high above the leaves, the pointed spires arrive in April and May, and show off more against the dark stems. Standing taller, this native draws pollinators from near and far! Forming open-branched clumps add delightful texture all growing season, long before and after the flowers have faded. Sometimes you'll enjoy the seed pods that dry as 'rattles' on the stems in the fall, adding some sound to the fall and winter landscape (and food for overwintering birds!).

Deer, drought, poor soil, sun, and cold-tolerant, Baptisia is a hardy native perennial and American wildflower, and this White Wild Indigo has all the same resilient qualities as its cousins! Long-lived and hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 8, and is especially suited as a southern wildflower. Wild Indigo grows 2-4 feet in height when in bloom, and spreads about 2-3 feet wide.

Planting and Application:

This prairie plant will quickly grow to fill bare spots in your perennial border each year, but the white spikes of flowers are what make Wild Indigo such a striking star amid other spring plantings. Snip a few stems for lovely bouquets, or keep the flowers outdoors for your many eager bees and butterflies to feast on!

A fantastic addition to Cottage gardens, Prairie and Meadow plantings, these mid-sized perennials are in the pea family and will fix nitrogen in the soil, so they're great for use around the Victory garden and in lean soil locations to improve soil health! Cottage and mixed Perennial gardens gain a tall and broad accent and that stunning white hue brings sublime coloration to any Moon garden or native restoration landscape!

Anchor garden beds and soften corners throughout the growing season, plus the blue-green foliage lends a fantastic backdrop for later emerging perennials and Roses. Plant as a spring specimen or in small groupings for a focal point planting. Plant with other Baptisia and native wildflowers; creating a wildlife habitat and Monarch rest stop in your own backyard.

Thriving in tough conditions, Baptisia are hardy natives that shrug off poor soil and drier, Xeric conditions once they're established. Plant in out-of-the-way locations, along hot sunny foundations and in native plant gardens, without worry the deer will eat them up. Plant Wild Indigo around your defensible zone for a pretty firewise landscaping plant!

  • Creamy White Spires of Pea-Like Flowers
  • Blue-Green Tri-Lobed Leaves On Airy Mounded Clumps
  • Long-Lived, Hardy & Adaptable Native Perennial Wildflower
  • Vital Pollinator Plant & Pretty Cut Flower
  • Great For Pollinators, Soil Improvement, Native Restorations & Firewise Landscapes

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Grow this ornamental native perennial in both full sun and partial shade, these vibrant plants are hardy and very cold tolerant! These herbaceous perennials shine throughout the hottest summers, where they appreciate afternoon shade for protection from the summer sun in the warmest of its favored hardiness zones..

Tolerating a wide range of soil types, these natives are hardy and adaptable to any conditions except wet, soggy soil. Provide Baptisia with well-drained soil with moderate moisture for best results. While very drought tolerant once established, be sure to provide supplemental water during the crucial establishment period and during times of extreme need.

Wild Indigo is a truly hardy native that will come back strong for you each year, getting bigger and more beautiful as time passes. It is long-lived, providing years of enjoyment for your landscape! Low-maintenance, you only need a few minutes deadheading after the flowers fade, then a few more in the late fall or winter to prune the entire plant back to the ground. Spread a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over the crown to protect it from snow and chill.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moderate Moisture - Adaptable Once Established
  • Must Have Well-Drained Soil
