Think of lush tropical islands as you walk around your yard and enjoy the stunning White Christmas Caladium (Caladium bicolor 'White Christmas') hanging out in the shady parts of your yard! It will feel like Christmas snow all summer!

Fancy Leaf Caladiums are often grown for seasonal color for displays in botanic gardens, malls, and commercial buildings for the Christmas season! They lighten up those shady spots with their bright, heart-shaped silver and white, and green variegated leaves. Inconspicuous, Calla Lily-type flowers appear in summer but are usually hidden by the leaves and not showy.

Caladium are Arum Lily family members occasionally produce spathe-like flowers but it's the heart-shaped variegated foliage that is what you will notice the most! This wintery beauty loves heat and humidity, and can be grown in any region as an indoor plant and can be grown outside once the nighttime temperatures are in the high 60s and above. Grown from tropical perennial tuberous corms, these can be grown year-round in USDA growing zones 9-11 but are annual accents or great seasonal bulbs to lift in the autumn like Calla Lilies and Elephant Ear bulbs.

Planting and Application:

Use White Christmas in the landscape as a groundcover, accent plant, and great companion plant to hide the bare stems of larger plants. #ProPlantTips for Care:

Growing Caladium indoors means providing them with bright sunlight but not direct sun. Outdoors Caladium prefers shade with a bit of morning sun and shade the rest of the day. Or plant in moist locations in dappled sunlight. Too much light will cause the vibrant colors to fade and the leaf edges to brown. During their growing season, these plants like their rich well-draining soil to be kept evenly moist but never soggy. A 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch helps hold in moisture and keep the roots cool.

Caladium being tropical plants, should be planted in the spring with their 'eyes' facing up and about 2 inches below the soil surface. Space them about 5-10 inches apart depending on how dense you wish your end result to look. Water well and add bulb fertilizer, keeping the soil evenly moist.

Trim away leaves as they become tattered or yellowed and once all foliage has died back in the fall, dig up your corms and store them as you would Canna and Dahlias.

  • Prefers Full Shade & Partial Shade
  • Organically Rich Soil
  • Well-Drained Moist Soil
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Clean Mounds As Foliage Yellows
  • Plant In Spring & Lift Corms in Fall Before Frost
