Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Growing Zones 4-8
Fantastic low shrub! Does your landscape need a little "pick-me-up?" With wavy, rich red-purple leaves, Spilled Wine® Weigela (Weigela florida 'Bokraspiwi') would be happy to serve you! It's lavishly covered in hot, magenta-pink, trumpet-shaped blooms all spring long. These tubular flowers are perfect for Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies! They love zipping up for a quick sip of nectar.
The brilliant blossoms absolutely "pop" against the vibrant leaves. As summer heats up, the foliage only becomes more vivid and intense, turning an eggplant purple in late summer. This foliage doesn't fade, and you'll enjoy the luscious deep foliage all season plus an occasional late-season rebloom to add delight!
This deciduous shrub also has a really useful growth habit. After all, a smaller plant that grows wider than tall can be used throughout the landscape! Use them throughout your landscape to pull the whole design together. This smart, deer-resistant shrub is a dependable high-performer. It's long-blooming and one of those plants that you can't take your eyes off of, even when it's not in bloom!
Planting and Application:
Plant them in the ground, or use them in containers on your patio or pool deck. Either way, you get a fabulous presentation. And they are so easy to care for! This Proven Winners® selection brightens up your landscape in many ways. Use it as a colorful foundation plant, even under windows! Weave it along the edge of your mixed shrub borders for a spectacular display. You can also repeat it as a beautiful backdrop behind perennials.
Blanket a wide, open area in full sun with a colorful mass planting of this charming, low-spreading shrub. For a faster fill, plant them 18 to 24 inches apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Mulch between plants in new mass plantings. Be sure to keep them weed-free as the shrubs grow together and touch.
Commercial landscapes can add them with confidence. You'll get all eyes on your property, and a low-maintenance option, as well! Of course, you can also enjoy Spilled Wine® Weigela as a dramatic "Thriller" by itself in a container. They can be styled in so many ways, from rustic to ultra-modern.
If your container is large enough, try several as "Filler" around the edges surrounding a taller Wine & Roses® Weigela "Thriller." The entire Wine series of Weigelas work together beautifully! The bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will not care, they'll love them all!
- Bright, Hot Pink Magenta Flowers
- Deep Dark Purple Foliage

- Attracts Butterflies & Hummingbirds
- Colorful Accent, Low, Spreading Habit & Versatile in Many Garden Applications
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This pretty shrub may look high-maintenance, but it's actually quite easy to grow. Plant in full sun for the best color. Weigela shrubs require at least six hours a day, with eight or more just improving the color and quality. Super easy to grow and doesn't fuss or require fussing, Weigela are very late to leaf out in spring, so be patient if you don't see signs of life on your shrub. Doing best in average garden soils, Weigela enjoys moderate moisture levels. Weigela does need well-drained soils but is not particular on the soil type. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill.
Weigela won't need much pruning, or deadheading in order to rebloom. However, if you wish to give them some pruning, just be sure to do it right after that first spring flush of color. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
