Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 4-8
Three-toned, trumpet-shaped blooms and a festival of color! The Carnaval™ Weigela (Weigela capifoliacear 'Courtalor') is a fun, ornamental deciduous shrub with adorable spring-to-summer blooms and reblooms! Your Carnaval™ Weigela is most beloved for its showy flowers. Resplendent in shades of white, pink, and red, each trumpet-shaped bloom is a delicate jewel amid the glossy, green foliage.
The first blossoms appear in late spring-early summer and draw nectar-seeking bees and butterflies, and squadrons of Hummingbirds! Growing to a hefty 4-5 feet in height and 3-5 feet wide, these shrubs have branches that naturally arch, but if you prefer a more upright appearance then simply apply your pruning shears.
Just when you think the floral display is over, your Carnaval™ Weigela will present you with yet another bloom in late summer or fall! When not in flower, the oblong, 4-inch, textured leaves will do a wonderful job filling out your shrub for an attractive appearance in your landscape throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8.
Planting and Application:
Carnaval™ is the perfect size for screening and privacy hedges or as a colorful foundation planting! Weigela are incredible flowering ornamentals to include in a mixed shrub border for pops of colorful flowers throughout the growing season! A single specimen or anchor in the landscape, and adding bright pops of color in sunny gardens.
Use just one as a celebration in the landscape, both as a specimen plant near your front door, where you're sure to enjoy its bloom! Create outdoor rooms of privacy around seating areas and carve out a slice of heaven. Carnaval™ also works well planted en masse in a naturalized area for woodland planting in winding rows or irregular groupings. Their tidy natural shape lends itself to an informal, and easy-to-care-for hedgerow.
- Pink, White & Red Funnel-Shaped Blooms
- Glossy Foliage & Arching Oval Shrubs
- Attracts Hummingbirds & Pollinators
- Easy to Grow & Cold Hardy
- Large Planters, Backdrops & Hedges, Specimen & Foundations!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Carnaval™ does best in sunny locations with moist soils but tolerates poor soils, including clay! It's drought-tolerant and transplants well. Weigela shrubs do best in average garden soils and enjoy moderate moisture levels. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill. Weigela won't need much pruning but it's best to do so right after flowering. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
- Most Blooms & Best Color in Full Sun
- Moderate Moisture Needs & Drought Tolerant
- Well-Drained Soils - Tolerates Urban Conditions
- Easy Care & Low-Maintenance & Deer Resistant
- Prune After Spring Bloom & No Deadheading Required
There are many flowering shrubs on the market today, but to find one that has adorable flowers throughout the summer, and on a hardy shrub that can take less-than-perfect conditions is a valuable plant for your yard. Buy your festive Carnaval™ Weigela for a colorful growing season for years from these long-lived shrubs! Order at Nature Hills today!
