Growing Zones 4-8
The Mohican Viburnum (Viburnum lantana 'Mohican') is an incredibly tough, deciduous shrub that may be evergreen in warmer climates. Featuring flat-topped clusters of creamy white blossoms that bees and butterflies go mad for! Erupting in bloom throughout late April and May, the entire rounded shrub is enveloped in flowers at the ends of each stem!
Filling out in lovely deep-green foliage with the characteristic Viburnum foliage, it has dark, hairy leaves that create a dark background to showcase other plants. It displays a very compact form and has a mature height of 6 feet tall and sports an equal spread that can extend upwards of 8 feet wide. It can, however, be pruned to any size to suit your landscape needs!
This shrub has one of the showiest displays of bright orange-red fruit in early July, persisting for a month before maturing to black in fall. These berries add ornamental value as well as a vital food source for birds, both songbirds and migratory birds! Plus, the compact branching is perfect nesting and shelter all growing season!
Planting and Application:
The Mohican makes a nice specimen plant, especially when pruned into a small, multi-branched tree form that will add an incredible focal point to your landscape. Use in large containers and planters for a pinpoint screen, or as a solitary in-ground anchor towards the back of your property for birds and butterflies to come to visit.
Ideal in rows as a privacy hedge or garden backdrop, these densely branched shrubs are even incredible windbreaks. Plant in groups for shelterbelts and naturalized settings, and add privacy in specific areas. Use in rows along your home's foundation or add an impressive barrier and property division.
- White Flowers Mature to Ornamental Black-Berries
- Dark Green Foliage Turns Purple Bronze in Autumn
- Dense Rounded Form
- Attracts Butterflies & Birds
- Juglone Tolerant & Deer Resistant
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Mohican Viburnum thrives in full to part sun and regular watering during times of drought. Adaptable throughout USDA hardiness zones 4-8. Highly adaptable to a wide range of soil types, any well-drained highly organic medium is fine. Mulch the site well with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips.
Wait to prune until after those amazing flowers are finished in spring. It's rare to need to tip prune, but you can shorten up the ends of branches right after flowering if you'd like. You can also skip tip pruning and renewal prune only if you wish to have fruit for birds. Renewal pruning removes the largest, thickest stems from the ground every 3 - 5 years. Leave the young stems in place, which will flower nicely for you next spring. Remove suckers at any time if they are not desired.
