Is it time for a change in your shady borders and beds? The Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Tuff Stuff® Hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata 'MAK20') is here to help you! This is a stunning new version of the classic lacecap Mountain Hydrangea. Since it blooms on old AND new wood, it is an almost non-stop bloomer from early summer all the way into fall!

Almost an "everbloomer" you really need to see Tuff Stuff® to understand its sheer flower power. The blooms are semi-double to fully double in the classic lacecap pattern - tiny dark red or deep purple flowers are in a cluster surrounded by larger florets that are magenta pink or lavender-blue (depending on the soil pH).

The flower heads are much bigger than you might expect from a shrub this size! Combined with the textured green leaves and their dense branching pattern. This gives you more blooms than you'd ever think possible! The large heart-shaped leaves are bright green all spring and summer but turn magenta and burgundy in the fall - while the flowers are still on the plant! Talk about a great color show!

Planting and Application:

Tuff Stuff® is also considerably more compact than other Reblooming Mountain Hydrangeas, making it the perfect choice for containers on your porch and patio, flanking paths or your driveway while elevated in a fancy urn or pot!

Highlight sunny low decks and balconies in pots, or as a low foundation planting that surrounds the perimeter. Likewise, the lacy blooms look gorgeous around the outside of a patio or ground-level deck, and dot the perennial border. Create dense bird-friendly shelters by planting groups or in rows for low screening.

  • More Blooms Than You Can Imagine!
  • Big Lacecap Blooms
  • Pink or Purple/Lavender-Blue Depending on pH
  • Great Flowers in Vintage Colors for Cutting & Drying
  • Gorgeous Fall Color

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Mountain Hydrangea are hardy natives throughout many parts of the US and are highly adaptable in the home landscape throughout USDA growing zones 5-9. Plant in full sun in cooler summer climates and part shade in hot growing zones, favoring afternoon shade in hot summer sun areas. Plant in enriched well-drained soil with a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the surface of the soil to hold in moisture and keep the roots cool. Prune only to remove dead wood in spring, after the new growth begins to emerge. Because these bloom on old and new wood, pruning too much will remove the new flowers!

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Well Drained Moderate Moisture
  • Prune Only in Spring
  • Appreciates Mulch
  • Blooms on Old & New Wood

This type of plant a slow grower? 5/6/19

Hello Kim,

Thank you so much for reaching out with your question about the Tuff Stuff™ Reblooming Mountain Hydrangea! We truly appreciate your interest and look forward to helping you get the best from your beautiful plant.

To answer your question, yes, the Tuff Stuff™ is known to be a somewhat slow grower compared to other hydrangeas. This variety is valued for its hardiness and reblooming nature rather than rapid growth. Typically, you can expect gradual but steady progress—especially in the first couple of growing seasons, as it establishes a strong root system. With proper care including well-drained soil, consistent moisture, and partial to full sun (morning sun is ideal), it will gradually fill in and reward you with summertime blooms.

If you’d like, we also have an in-depth care guide for mountain hydrangeas on our website under “Plant Care Tips” that can provide more detailed info. And don’t hesitate to reach out anytime with follow-up questions or if you want personalized advice based on your local conditions.

Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills—we’re here to support your gardening journey every step of the way.

This type of plant a slow grower? 5/6/19

Hello Kim,

Thank you so much for reaching out with your question about the Tuff Stuff™ Reblooming Mountain Hydrangea! We truly appreciate your curiosity and taking the time to connect with us.

The Tuff Stuff™ Mountain Hydrangea is known to be a relatively slow to moderate grower, especially in its early years. This is quite normal as the plant establishes a strong root system before putting extensive energy into rapid top growth. Typically, you can expect steady growth each season as it acclimates to your garden environment, and patience will be well rewarded with those beautiful reblooming clusters over time.

To support your hydrangea's healthy growth, be sure to plant it in well-draining soil with some organic matter and water consistently—especially during dry spells. These plants prefer partial shade, but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer in spring and mid-summer can also help encourage vigorous new shoots and blooms.

Heavy bloomer

Small plant with many flowers. Nice!

Hi Denzel,

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely feedback! We're delighted to hear that your Tuff Stuff™ Reblooming Mountain Hydrangea is blooming beautifully and impressing you with so many flowers, especially for a smaller plant. These hydrangeas are truly a wonderful addition to any garden with their extended bloom time and charm.

If you'd like to keep those flowers thriving season after season, make sure your hydrangea gets well-drained soil and part-shade to full-sun exposure, and be sure to water it consistently—hydrated roots help produce those heavy blooms!
