Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |
4" Container | 0.31 - 0.87 dry quarts | 0.35 - 0.96 dry liters |
4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |
6" Container | 1.4 dry quarts | 1.59 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Rabbiteye, Midseason
Tifblue is an extraordinary Rabbiteye Blueberry that ripens midseason. The vigorous Tifblue Blueberry (Vaccinium ashei 'Tifblue') will produce delectable, firm, and flavorful fruit.
This variety is adaptable to a variety of soils and overall very hardy. It's better able to tolerate late winter and early spring freezes than conventional Highbush Blueberry varieties. It has a greater tolerance to higher pH soils.
This is a self-fruitful, premium Blueberry, but you'll enjoy a far bigger crop when you plant additional Rabbiteye varieties (such as Climax and Brightwell) nearby. The good news with adding more Blueberry shrubs is two-fold. First, you'll enjoy a larger harvest, and second, careful planning with extending your harvest period.
In spring, buds open into delicate, white, bell-shaped blossoms. The flowers are followed by a big crop of sweet, superior fruit that begins to ripen in the Midseason. The light blue berries appear in clusters displayed against the blue-green foliage.
Tifblue is a big producer of highly nutritious Blueberries. Loaded with beneficial antioxidants, Vitamin C, manganese for bone development, fiber, and fiber, you can hardly find a healthier fruit. You'll love being able to "hand-pick" a healthy snack for your family. Freeze, and use in sweet and savory recipes.
Just be prepared. You'll want to plan ahead to prep a BIG crop with this premium variety. Host an annual Blueberry party or take a few days off work. You'll want to get ALL the benefits from your backyard orchard, after all.
The small to medium-size fruit is firm and tastes like a tart, wild Blueberry until ripe. Once ripe, the flavor mellows into a rich, flavorful taste. The berries hang onto the bush quite well, but you'll want to protect your crop from hungry birds using nets.
Tifblue offers one of the best fall color displays. You'll love the remarkable transition from vibrant green to shades of brilliant burgundy red.
With an upright form and large size, this is a wonderful edible ornamental screen in the landscape. Plant several for a unique, hard-working privacy hedge with benefits.
Remember to consider several different Rabbiteyes for your own mini-orchard or to screen out that unwanted view. They don't require special care and yet provide flowers, berries, form, and fall interest every year.
Of course, even more enchanting, is the opportunity to have your own delicious fruit available to you, fresh-picked by your own hand. It’s a marvel to be sure… and one you won’t want to miss out on experiencing this year!
Recommended Partners for Larger Crops: Climax and Brightwell.
Foundation of the Southern Blueberry Industry
A University of Georgia release in 1955, the Tifblue was the result of the early work of Dr. Tom Brightwell and the USDA. A select seedling from a carefully monitored collection of seedlings, the goal being to select a fine flavored Blueberry able to tolerate the hot humid and often unpredictable climates of the Southern states.
The results were three selections beginning in 1950, the first 2 marginally successful, but the Tifblue changed the Blueberry industry.
Tifblue is one of the first commercial Rabbiteye Blueberries to offer a competitive quality that the Southeastern and Southern Blueberry growers could be proud of. Starting in the 1960's and continuing well into the 1980's, the Tifblue became the most widely planted Rabbiteye planted throughout the world.
