Fast-growing and carefree, the Thornless Honeylocust Tree (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis) is an attractive, fast-growing tree. It would be perfect for your street or driveway due to its hardy, adaptable nature. Your Thornless Honeylocust tree is easy to grow, so it will consistently provide its admirable features without a lot of work from you.

Its delicate pinnately compound leaves are finely textured, displaying a graceful shimmer in the lightest of breezes and casting a relaxing, filtered shade. Delicate flowers will appear in the spring, pristine white and gracing your yard with their sweet fragrance. You may not see the sprays of blooms but pollinators are quick to seek them out!

The early yellow leaf color and the way the wind plays through the lacy leaves will draw your eye. Then the yellow-gold fall foliage will light up your landscape in the autumn before dropping and fluttering away in the breeze - making fall clean-up a snap! The bark lends winter interest with its fissured, grey bark with an orange-tinted interior that becomes even more interesting with age.

Hardy and resilient throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9, there is little that fazes these trees - not heat, sun, cold, deer, compacted soil, saline conditions, or urban pollution!

Planting and Application:

If you'd like a tree to cast dappled shade over a walkway, a parking lot or driveway, or a backyard entertainment area - then this is the tree for you! Honeylocust trees aren't fazed by street or air pollution, salt, compacted soil, or a whole range of soil types, including challenging soil conditions. You can also use Honeylocust as a bright accent specimen tree.

Your turf grasses can grow beneath it. Pretty perennials or small shrubs for partial shade can easily establish and grow for you directly underneath it. Shade your backyard entertainment areas or reduce cooling costs in the summer by situating this tree 10-15 feet from your home to block the sun in the summer but let light through in the winter once the deciduous leaves drop.

Recommended for wherever a large shade tree is required, the Thornless Honey Locust works in large parking lot islands or buffer zone plantings. Municipalities have used Honeylocust trees as street trees because of their great adaptability to soils and tolerance where road salt is used.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant in full sun and nearly any well-drained soil and then enjoy seeing up to two feet of growth each year with your fast-growing Thornless Honeylocust - without having to fuss or fret over it. Thornless Honeylocust is quite hardy and tolerates a variety of conditions including drought, salt, and urban environments! Once it's established in your soil, it will be quite drought-tolerant. Top the soil with a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch - especially when planted in the lawn. Create a buffer zone extending 3-4 feet from the trunk to protect the bark from mower damage.

Honeylocust trees do not mind some pruning and don't mind being shaped to match your preferences. Pruning the low branches doesn't detract from the tree's appearance and it's almost seedless, so raking isn't an issue either. You can even easily transplant it should you decide to try a different location.

  • Full Sun Deciduous Tree
  • Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs Once Established
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Highly Tolerant, Resistant & Hardy

The easy breezy Thornless Honeylocust Tree clearly has a lot to offer and would make an outstanding addition to your yard! Order yours today at Nature Hills!

I like the yellow fall color of the Thornless Honeylocust. It blends in with my neighbors green ash with all the yellow in our back yards.

Hello Jake,

We're delighted to hear you enjoy the bright yellow fall color, and that it complements your neighbor’s green ash so beautifully. It’s wonderful when different trees create harmonious autumn landscapes and add even more charm to your backyard.

If you’re ever looking to enhance that seasonal vibrancy, consider adding some native perennials or shrubs that provide autumn blooms or foliage contrast. And be sure to keep your honeylocust well-watered into the fall, as that helps with healthy color development and overall tree vigor.

Hi Jake,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on your Thornless Honeylocust Tree! We’re thrilled to hear you love its vibrant yellow fall color and how beautifully it complements your neighbor’s green ash. Fall foliage is truly one of nature’s joys, and it sounds like your backyard has a lovely autumn palette!

If you’re interested in enhancing that fall display further, consider adding plants with complementary colors or varied textures—perhaps some native grasses or late-season perennials that maintain interest as leaves change. Also, be sure to keep an eye on watering during dry spells, as consistent moisture can help maintain leaf health and vibrant color longer into the season.

We’re always here if you have any more questions or want plant recommendations to keep your landscape thriving!

Janet
leaf size

Being a lazy yard person, especially in the fall at leaf raking time, I really like the Thornless Honeylocust leaves because they are thin and light and most of the time they end up blown a long ways from my lawn. I like the yellow fall color of the leaves also.

Hi Janet P.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Thornless Honeylocust! We’re delighted to hear that the delicate, lightweight leaves make fall cleanup easier for you—that’s one of the golden perks of this beautiful tree. Its lovely yellow autumn color really adds a warm glow to any yard. If you ever want to enhance your yard further with low-maintenance trees or plants that create seasonal interest, we’d be happy to suggest more options that suit your yard care style.

If you’re open to a little extra care, gently gathering and composting these leaves can turn them into a nutrient-rich amendment for garden beds, helping future growth thrive without the hassle of extra yard work.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review, Janet!

Wishing you happy planting,
